Outreach program for bright and talented middle school students interested in investigating concepts in mathematics related to STEM related majors and careers.

The program will run from 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Each day students will participate in instructional sessions taught by FGCU professors, problem solving sessions led by FGCU mathematics graduate students and hands-on STEM activities. The instructional session will be conducted as an inquiry-based lesson. Students will be working in small groups on interesting problems and hands-on activ

Florida Gulf Coast University was honored to host Dr. Tony DeRose for his engaging presentation, “Pixar in a Box: The Math Behind the Movies.” 🎬📐

Dr. DeRose gave students and the community a fascinating look at how mathematics helps bring animated films to life. His talk inspired many of our mathematics majors to consider new possibilities in animation and computer graphics.

Thank you to all of our amazing students, families, and schools for participating in the FGCU AMC 8 Competition! 🎉

We were excited to host students representing over 23 middle schools, including schools as far as Sarasota Middle School. Your enthusiasm and hard work made this event a great success!

The AMC 8 competition is still taking place nationally through January 30, and once the national results are finalized, the Competition Managers will email scores and rankings by mid-February (February 14, if results are available by then).

Our speaker, Dr. Tony DeRose, spent 23 years as a Senior Scientist at Pixar Animation Studios and is a pioneer in geometric modeling and animation. In his presentation, “Pixar in a Box: The Math Behind the Movies,” Dr. DeRose will explore how mathematics underpins storytelling, creativity, and technology, offering students and the broader community a tangible bridge between discovery and practice.

We’re just wrapped up Week 7 of our AMC - 8 Workshop! It was wonderful to see our students’ faces in person and watch their problem-solving skills grow. We’re excited for our final week 8: a virtual session on Friday, followed by our in-person graduation session next Saturday. Looking forward to celebrating all of our students’ hard work!

Day 2 of the AMC 10/12 Competition has concluded! Thank you to all students, parents and teachers for joining us at Florida Gulf Coast University Results will be announced closer to Thanksgiving break, and the top scores from each competition will receive a $150 award, thanks to the FGCU College of Arts and Sciences

We were thrilled to welcome students from 20 different schools, including those traveling from as far as St. Petersburg, Charlotte, Lee and Collier Counties!
A big thank you to our FGCU Admissions Counselor for welcoming students and giving an inspiring presentation on why Florida Gulf Coast University should be their university of choice!
We also thank FGCU College of Arts and Sciences for awarding $150 in gift cards to the top scores in AMC 10 and 12.

Our Mathletes had a spooktacular time this week at the AMC 8 workshop! 🎃👻 Students came dressed in their best Halloween costumes while tackling some tricky math problems. It was a perfect mix of creativity, costumes, and critical thinking — proving that math can be both fun and festive! 🧮✨
