A meaningful moment for Tarrant County!
Today, June 9, 2026, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court and Judge Tim O’Hare officially issued a Proclamation recognizing Elder Abuse Awareness Month.
This proclamation shines a light on the importance of protecting our older adults from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and self-neglect while encouraging our community to stand together in support of our seniors.
Thank you to our county leaders, Adult Protective Services, and all the advocates who work tirelessly to ensure that every older adult is treated with the dignity, respect, and care they deserve.
Did you know?
Financial exploitation is one of the most common forms of elder abuse, and it is often committed by someone the older adult knows and trusts, not a stranger.
Warning signs may include:
Unexplained withdrawals from bank accounts
Sudden changes to wills or powers of attorney
A new “friend” or caregiver controlling finances
Unpaid bills despite having sufficient income
Isolation from family and friends
If you suspect financial exploitation, report your concerns to your local Adult Protective Services agency or law enforcement. Early intervention can prevent devastating losses and protect an older adult’s independence.
When you report, make sure you are reporting out of concern, not conflict. Make sure your concern is based on genuine observations or evidence rather than frustration, anger, or a personal disagreement. When in doubt, share the facts you know and allow APS to assess the situation.
Helpful phrases when you call APS: “I’m concerned that an older/vulnerable adult may be experiencing financial exploitation. I don’t know all the facts, but I’d like to report the specific behaviors I’ve observed and let APS determine whether an investigation is appropriate.”
