U-Launch: Childhood Development Homes

One of the biggest lessons I am learning as I continue sharing the U-LAUNCH story is that people often pause when they first hear about what we do.

Not because they disagree with it.

But because they are trying to figure out where it fits.

Are we childcare?

Are we workforce development?

Are we entrepreneurship?

Are we apprenticeship?

Are we economic development?

The answer is all of the above.

For years, I described U-LAUNCH as a childcare organization. However, after attending workforce, economic development, and early childhood discussions throughout Virginia, I have come to realize that what we built is much bigger than childcare.

Communities need childcare so parents can work.

Employers need workers to fill jobs.

Individuals need pathways to economic mobility.

Regions need small businesses.

States need measurable outcomes.

U-LAUNCH was intentionally designed to address all of those needs at the same time.

Through our model, we create:

✔ New Childcare Educator Operators (CEOs)
✔ New home-based childcare businesses
✔ Registered Apprenticeship opportunities
✔ Workforce development pathways
✔ Entrepreneurship opportunities
✔ Increased childcare capacity
✔ Greater workforce participation for families

What I am discovering is that the conversation changes when people stop asking:

“What is U-LAUNCH?”

And start asking:

“How can U-LAUNCH help solve the challenges we are already trying to address?”

Maybe the future is not about fitting neatly into an existing category.

Maybe the future is about building infrastructure that creates measurable outcomes for communities.

Childcare is not simply an early childhood issue.

It is workforce infrastructure.

It is economic infrastructure.

It is community infrastructure.

And perhaps that is why so many of the conversations taking place today around workforce participation, economic growth, entrepreneurship, and community development keep leading back to childcare.

One thing that really stood out was the number of people who were interested in becoming Childcare Educator Operators (CEOs) rather than pursuing traditional employment opportunities.

Many visitors wanted to learn how they could:
🏡 Operate their own Approved Childhood Development Home
📚 Participate in a paid Registered Apprenticeship
💼 Build a childcare business
👶 Serve families in their own communities

Several attendees expressed interest in becoming Childcare Educator Operators after learning that the pathway combined paid apprenticeship, workforce development, and business ownership opportunities.

The conversations were inspiring and confirmed that many people are looking for more than a job—they are looking for a pathway to ownership, flexibility, and long-term opportunity.

The more I work within Virginia’s early childhood ecosystem, the more I find myself asking a difficult question:

Have we become better at managing the childcare crisis than solving it?

Across the country, we continue to hear about childcare deserts, workforce shortages, provider closures, and families struggling to find care. Yet many organizations spend significant time reporting on the problem while relatively little attention is given to building new childcare infrastructure.

Childcare infrastructure is not a report.

It is not a committee.

It is not a strategic plan.

Childcare infrastructure is a trained educator opening their doors to serve children.

It is a sustainable business model that allows providers to remain in operation.

It is a workforce pathway that recruits, trains, and supports the next generation of childcare professionals.

It is new childcare slots being created where families actually live.

As a founder working in the home-based childcare space, I have learned that innovation can be difficult within highly structured systems. Organizations often face competing priorities: compliance, funding requirements, reporting obligations, and alignment with state initiatives.

Those responsibilities matter.

But at some point, we must also ask whether our systems are producing the outcomes families need.

If a region continues to report childcare shortages year after year, then accountability cannot stop at identifying the problem. We must also evaluate whether the structures we have built are creating enough solutions.

Families do not need another report telling them childcare is unavailable.

They need childcare.

Perhaps the next chapter of early childhood development is not about creating more programs to manage the crisis, but creating more infrastructure to solve it.

📣 Expansion Announcement: U-LAUNCH Opens the Western Region

I am excited to announce that the Western Region of U-LAUNCH: Childhood Development Homes is now officially open.

This milestone expands our statewide network of regional support and oversight designed to strengthen childcare capacity, workforce development, and entrepreneurship opportunities through Approved Childhood Development Homes across Virginia.

As part of this expansion, I am pleased to welcome Jahnia Montgomery of Christiansburg, Virginia as our Western Region Program Specialist.

Jahnia will support outreach, technical assistance, workforce pathway development, and recruitment efforts throughout the region while helping connect prospective Childcare Educator Operators (CEOs) to the U-LAUNCH system and the CEO Registered Apprenticeship Program.

The Western Region includes communities throughout Southwest Virginia, including:
• Blacksburg
• Christiansburg
• Bristol
• Galax
• Radford
• Norton
and surrounding counties.

This expansion reflects our continued commitment to building childcare infrastructure that supports:

Today I had the opportunity to attend the “Early Childhood Investment: Unlocking Economic Growth in Hampton Roads” event hosted by Minus 9 to 5 and the Hampton Roads Executive Roundtable.

Throughout the event, leaders discussed the importance of building systems that connect workforce development, education, business, childcare expansion, and economic growth.

What stood out to me most was this:

Many organizations are still trying to create collaboratively what we at U-LAUNCH: Childhood Development Homes have already built.

We have already developed:
• A centralized shared-services childcare ecosystem
• A Registered Apprenticeship workforce pipeline
• A home-based entrepreneurship model
• Quality monitoring and operational oversight systems
• Business incubation infrastructure
• Workforce-to-business ownership pathways
• Community-based childcare expansion systems

U-LAUNCH was designed to bridge education, opportunity, workforce, and business ownership under one operational framework.

We do not simply talk about childcare as infrastructure.
We built the infrastructure.

As conversations continue nationally around workforce participation, childcare shortages, economic mobility, and sustainable expansion models, I believe systems like ours will become increasingly important.

The future of childcare will not be fragmented.
It will require integrated ecosystems that connect families, workforce, education, and entrepreneurship together.

That future is what U-LAUNCH was built for.

The U.S. Department of Education has announced the newest round of the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Program — a major federal funding opportunity designed to help colleges and universities expand childcare support services for low-income student parents.

As institutions across Virginia continue working to improve student retention, workforce participation, and completion outcomes, this presents a powerful opportunity to develop collaborative childcare infrastructure models that extend beyond traditional campus childcare centers.

U-LAUNCH: Childhood Development Homes believes community-based childcare partnerships may play a critical role in helping institutions:
✔ Expand childcare access
✔ Increase infant/toddler capacity
✔ Support evening and weekend learners
✔ Reach rural and underserved communities
✔ Strengthen workforce pathways
