Today, while reading The Day the Crayons Quit, I asked my K–1 students what they thought would happen as we got to the end of the story. One kiddo immediately raised her hand with a very excited and confident answer of, "The crayons are going into retirement."

The crayons spend the whole story talking about how tired, frustrated, and overworked they were, and in her mind, retirement was the obvious answer. Kids are always making sense of the world around them. Sometimes their connections are funny, sometimes they're insightful, and sometimes they're both.

As an incentive to complete practice in Math and ELA over the summer, I am rewarding my students with Plinko chips for pages completed. Each week we'll play plinko after each class to see who is the winner. I didn't realize that the competitive spirit runs deep in the veins of these kiddos!
