"Just because somebody isn't like us doesn't mean they're not of us. We have to acknowledge their humanity. Juneteenth does that significantly. And it's through all of us that we move forward."
Tamba-Kuii Bailey, PhD
Thanks to all who joined us this morning for a conversation about the history of Juneteenth!

The Hilyard Center staff presented on the role of food in fostering community and belonging. Their session, “Belonging Isn’t Something We Stumble Into: When Food Is More Than a Meal,” explored the growing challenges of isolation and loneliness and highlighted research demonstrating how shared food experiences strengthen connections, build community, and promote a sense of belonging. Research shows that students who report higher levels of belonging are more likely to be academically engaged, both in the classroom and through the use of campus support resources. Increased belonging is also associated with higher student retention rates, underscoring the importance of creating intentional opportunities for connection and community on campus.

The Hilyard Center served 1,570 breakfasts this year through our Community Breakfasts.
Research shows that, “Shared meals (also called commensality) create opportunities for conversation, relationship-building, and a sense of belonging. They help form supportive social networks and strengthen community ties.”
We’ve seen new friendships form, students connect with staff, faculty, and administrators, and shared countless memories with one another.
We can’t wait to see you back at The Hilyard in the fall!
