| Tonight, the County Commissioners proved that we are not in, fact “One Guilford.” To say that we are disappointed is an understatement. While Senate Bill 889 changed revenue projections, the needs of our children did not change. We presented a $24.7M budget on April 16, a month earlier than the statutory deadline. On May 7, the Manager proposed $19M, and the community supported it.
What the county approved tonight, $5.6 million in additional funding, does not fund safety measures for you and our students, it doesn’t fund promised pay increases for classified staff and it doesn’t fund our legislative requirements or for us to sustain current operations.
Instead, the county prioritized $8 M in merit pay and bonuses for its employees while breaking its promise to our staff to move GCS’s classified staff pay closer to market rate leaving thousands of hardworking employees out entirely. Our district needs have been characterized as tax increases. Education is a right, not a tax burden.
We have been, and will continue to be, committed to being responsible stewards of the taxpayers’ dollars we receive. By the end of 2027, we will have closed seven schools in three years. For years, we’ve made concessions. For years, we’ve made cuts and reductions. For years, our teachers and staff – our county's constituents - have continued to work hard to support our students, with the promise that one day, they’ll get paid what they’re worth; and despite their sacrifice for years, our students have continued to excel. Our schools are top rated in the state and the nation. Our graduation rate exceeds the state average, and our achievement has steadily increased and is surpassing pre-COVID levels. Our programs are fueling workforce development pipelines that boost this county’s economy and at some point, enough is enough.
Once again, the system has failed our students, especially those who have been traditionally underserved. Every day, we choose our students, but tonight, they chose themselves and these choices will be felt in classrooms across the district.
Hello, my name is Mr. Tajae Pryce and I am excited to support the Kiser Middle School community this year as an Assistant Principal Intern through my Master of School Administration program at Appalachian State University. I am originally from Jamaica and love traveling back home to recharge and spend time with family. I currently serve as an Exceptional Children teacher and Department Chair at Grimsley High School, where I have worked for the past 10 years. My wife and I recently welcomed our first son, Adrian, so this summer has been full of joy and new beginnings! I am passionate about supporting our students, building strong relationships and helping school communities grow, and I look forward to learning from and contributing to the Kiser Family this year!
Hi! I'm Leslie Orsini, and I'm excited to be joining the Kiser community! As a proud graduate of Guilford County Schools and Greensboro College, it's especially meaningful for me to give back to the school system that made me. I've spent the last several years teaching middle school ELA and am excited to begin a new adventure teaching Social Studies. When I'm not at school, you'll usually find me spending time with my three kids, planning our next State park adventure, or getting lost in a good book!
Hi, I'm Mara Montana and I am so excited to join the Kiser family as an ELA teacher! Originally from New York, I made my way down South when my husband joined the School of Business at Wake Forest University. I am so excited to share my love of reading and writing with my students! When I'm not in the classroom, you can find me enjoying the outdoors or on a basketball court with my two daughters. I can't wait to meet everyone!
