Rising Voices in Southeast Asian Studies | SEAC / AAS Initiative
Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference 2027

The Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is calling for paper proposals from up-and-coming scholars to join a Rising Voices panel on the topic of “Shrinking Spaces for Free Inquiry in Southeast Asian Studies.” We seek to recruit early career scholars, or “rising voices,” including graduate students, independent scholars, and untenured faculty, with preference for those based at underfunded institutions from Southeast Asian countries (see below for eligibility). Accepted paper proposals will form a panel for presentation and inclusion in the 2027 Annual Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, to be held in Boston, MA from March 18-21, 2027. SEAC will provide partial financial assistance for presenters to attend the annual conference and meetings. In addition to receiving financial support from the AAS/SEAC, this year’s Rising Voices Panel also has financial support provided by TRaNS: Trans- Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia.

The publications of Hanoi Grapevine's Finest (HGF)—an annual, audience-nominated recognition of outstanding contemporary art projects in Vietnam, running since 2019—are now hosted on the Southeast Asia Digital Library (SEADL). Organized by Cornell University Library and Cornell's Southeast Asia Program, this live-streamed conversation marks the launch of the HGF digital collection and explores what it means for a grassroots, bottom-up archive to enter an international digital library consortium.
In this discussion, a cultural practitioner, an anthropologist, and a digital librarian think through questions of whose knowledge counts, how digital archives shape research narratives, and what happens when an audience-led record meets the infrastructure of international scholarly preservation.

🇮🇩 Indonesia Summer Workshop 2026 | City & Energy: Towards Sustainability, Resilience, Equity ☀️
Rising global energy demand and continued reliance on fossil fuels increase environmental and climate challenges. To address these issues, the Faculty of Engineering of Universitas Diponegoro and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa organize the Summer Workshop 2026 as an inclusive platform for engineering students to collaborate, gain real-world insights, and develop innovative solutions for future sustainable energy challenges. 🌱
This Summer Course will bring participants to do site visits to communities in and around the Semarang city to enable an appreciation of the multiple implications of energy dynamics for cities. Besides that, participants will also be complemented with lectures and group work. This is a unique opportunity to experience new cultures and learn together with students from different backgrounds.

💬 CALL FOR PROPOSALS | International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation 2027: Arts Sustaining Language 🎨
The 10th International Conference on Language Documentation & Conservation (ICLDC) 2027 hopes to facilitate a dialogue that places artistic and creative practice at the heart of language documentation and conservation.
Oral literature, theatre, music, dance, visual arts, poetry, film, and digital media all offer pathways for strengthening speaker identity and language awareness, for reaching new generations of learners, and for documenting language in ways that recognize its creative potential. How do creative practices reshape documentation methodologies? What role do emerging media play in amplifying minoritized languages, and what risks do they carry?
ICLDC welcomes and encourages performance-based contributions that demonstrate the connections between art and language.

The Cohesion under Crisis research team at the University of Michigan is offering five $18,000 fellowships for graduate students and recent graduates to conduct three months of fieldwork on social cohesion in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, or Vietnam!
In addition to their own research, fellows will conduct three months of fieldwork in one of five focus countries, examining the historical roots of social cleavages and how communities respond to political, economic, and environmental crises.
