We are seeking applications from energy stakeholders in Hawai‘i and Pacific U.S. Territories who are interested in receiving technical and policy support from our project team over the next 12 to 18 months. HNEI researchers participated in the 2019 SOEST Open House and produced exhibits that featured hands-on activities to demonstrate integration of renewable energy, power generation, and energy efficiency and how electrochemical power systems work using battery technology. HNEI's Grid System Technologies Advanced Research Team (GridSTART), in collaboration with Maui Electric Company (MECO) and with funding from the Office of Naval Research has proposed and installed a practical, inexpensive and effective solution to address the integration of very high levels of rooftop PV and the occasional excess of intermittent solar energy produced in aggregate by the PV systems on the Island of Moloka‘i.

HNEI Assistant Researcher, Dr. Trevor Morgan, co-authored the book Solid Fuels and Heavy Hydrocarbon Liquids: Thermal Characterization and Analysis, Second Edition.
The publisher, Elsevier, states that this book "integrates the developments that have taken place since publication of the first edition in 2006. HNEI's Hawaii Sustainable Energy Research Facility (HiSERF) is featured in the Springer Handbook of Electrochemical Energy. The handbook featured a chapter entitled “Modern Fuel Cell Testing Laboratory” based on HiSERF. The chapter describes the laboratory’s background and evolution, safety and test stations, fuel cell components and assembly, and testing and diagnostic techniques. Many of our HNEI-HiSERF staff contributed to this chapter.
