For kids, it's often easy to say yes to things that seem far off in the future - but it hits different when that future actually arrives😅
Executive function is a skillset that develops over time. That means a child's growing mind and abilities are still a work in progress, which can leave them scrambling for clarity in spaces that "should" make sense.
Remembering directions, managing their time, and thinking through logical steps can become a huge, ugly monster the moment they come face-to-face with it, but with the right guidance, accountability, and consistent practice, anyone can learn these essential life skills!
If you're the parent of a child who can't get started, can't finish, can't remember what to do, or struggles to emotionally regulate during seemingly simple tasks, let's talk.
It may be an executive function skill gap.

When kids struggle with focus, emotions, or follow-through, the answer isn’t “try harder.”
We help K-12 students build the executive functioning skills that support learning and life.
Why is it that for so many students, the end of the school year feels like being released from prison?
This was taken at a local high school. The teachers here are good people; they genuinely care. They show up every day and try to do right by these kids.
And yet, they’re bound by strict curriculum and hand-me-down testing standards that ring hollow for most young people (and honestly, most adults too).
They know as well as we do that the vast majority of what they learn within these walls, once they leave, won’t ever be on the test of LIFE.
Here’s what a lot of them actually learn:
- How to memorize information just long enough to spit it back out on a test, then immediately forget it
- How to cram or cheat your way into an acceptable mark on a piece of paper
- that your potential to succeed in life is almost entirely determined by how you perform here
- There is one acceptable way of measuring intelligence, and if you don’t meet that standard, you’re not “smart”
- You need to get good grades, to get into college, to get a good job, to make enough money to be rich (or at least not be poor). This is the point of life - hard stop.
This is not a failing of the school. It’s a failing of the SYSTEM.
What if instead, we taught kids how to...? :
- Communicate their needs and navigate conflict without exploding or shutting down
- Learn from failure and move through it gracefully, without making it mean things about their inherent ability and worth
- Set and achieve goals that THEY care about, not just what’s forced on them
- ask better questions, instead of just answering them
- Take care of their physical and mental health practically and sustainably, so that their bodies don’t break down on them early
These are questions we asked ourselves at REACH - and that we now answer.
If your child struggles to find enthusiasm for school, can’t seem to emotionally regulate, or doesn't bounce back well from failure... let’s talk.

Some kids aren’t simply refusing to cooperate...
Their nervous system is in fact overwhelmed, stuck, or trying to hold too many steps at once. Support for executive functioning starts with understanding what the struggle underneath actually is.
And it can show up like this: 👇🏼
When getting started on a task feels hard, it may look like laziness.
When directions have too many steps to understand at once, it may appear as no follow through.
When the backpack, folder, and water bottle all get lost, it may seem like being disorganized.
When they freeze, forget, or melt down, it can come off as not listening.
💕 This is the reality of what is happening:
They know what they need to do but can't figure out how to take the first step.
Their working memory isn't holding all the steps at once and by the time they get to step three, steps one and two are already gone.
Their brain hasn't built a system yet for tracking and organizing objects. Every day feels like starting from scratch.
Their nervous system is overwhelmed and has hit its limit. That's not defiance is not having developed regulation skills.
This is why understanding the skill underneath the behavior changes everything. 💛
If this sounds like your kid, follow along. This page is for you.
Do we use math problems to teach anxiety management? Sometimes.
Do we have honest conversations about how our past can influence our present? Yep.
But these are simply tools we use to deepen understandings and strengthen each student’s ability to apply the skills we teach in the real world.
That’s the difference between treating a symptom and building a solid foundation.

Many teens struggle with academic stress, but the real issue isn’t just tests or homework.
Anxiety and social pressure can make school feel overwhelming. Without the necessary level of built-in resilience, setbacks can feel like failures instead of learning moments, and when we accumulate enough "failures," we inevitably start to think WE'RE a failure, which ultimately holds us back from reaching our full potential.😒
The good news? Resilience is a learned skill that can be developed. 💪

💡Struggling in School? The Real Problem Isn’t What You Think…
Many parents believe the key to better grades is more tutoring, stricter rules, or longer study sessions. But what if the real solution had nothing to do with academics? 🤔
When teens lack confidence, feel overwhelmed by stress, or struggle with resilience, their academic performance takes a backseat. It’s not about how much they study—it’s about how they feel about themselves and their ability to succeed.
✨ The good news? With the right tools, teens can develop the emotional skills they need to thrive, not just in school, but in life.

Many teens (and adults) believe success means grinding nonstop until they collapse.😵
But, despite what you may have heard, we’re not machines.🤖 Our nervous systems aren’t designed for constant output—they’re designed for cycles of effort and rest.
Without adequate time to recharge, the body becomes depleted.😪
This can make even small challenges feel overwhelming and send us into a freeze or shutdown state, where the body tries to conserve energy in order to wait out a threat until it passes.
When we’re in this freeze state, we’re still generally capable of doing the bare minimum (think scrolling endlessly on social), but we can’t seem to work up the motivation to do the things we really need or want to do.
This almost always leads to feelings of shame and guilt for not being able to “just do it”—which heaps even more overwhelm into our system, keeping us feeling all the more stuck.😩
At REACH, we teach teens how to:
✨Pace their work with mindfulness and structure.
✨Build intentional breaks into their schedules.
✨Focus on small wins to stay motivated without burning out.
Success isn’t built on self-sacrifice—it’s built on balance, consistency, and self-compassion.💛
If this resonates, save this post for later or share it with someone who needs it.
