If I had to start over in my garden with a clean slate and just 3 plants it would a tough decision. But if I HAD to choose I think I would pick up a Banana Shrub as my "stuctural" plant for the evergreen foliage and the super delicious smell from the blooms that periodically pops off all throughout the year. I'd also pick up a Mystic Spires Salvia for the super long and prolific bloom time from Spring to Winter and its ability to attract bees and butterflies. Also, it is super easy to propagate and grows fast so its a great one to fill out a garden quickly. Finally, I'd grab an Angel's Trumpet for a showstopping ornamental tree that looks like it belongs in a fairy forest. They grow quickly and bloom easily and like the Mystic Spires, can be propagated from cuttings for more and more plants for free.

What would you grow?

No cottage garden is complete without an ornamental tree dripping with blooms. This Angel Trumpet was a fall clearance buy and man, I wish I would've found her years ago. Its only been in the ground for 6 months and it is doing fabulously well. If you have a full to part-sun spot for a small ornamental tree, definitely consider this beauty.

Did you know that you can grow plants for bouquets right inside your landscape? If you plan correctly and plant intentionally, you can have flowers to cut and bring indoors nearly year round in zone 9. AND, you can set it and forget it by using perennial flowers that just come back bigger and better year after year.

In my own garden, these are some of my favorite flowering perennials I use for my bouquets. I usually mix in flowering annuals as well for a variety of blooms season after season.
