Spelling impacts Reading. The more students understand and become familiar with a word's spelling and its relatives, the easier reading those words becomes.

➡bake, baking, bakes, baker, baked, bakery, unbaked, bakeries

🌟Put the spelling practice into a phrase and you've added more meaning.

➡can bake, enjoys baking, bakes bread, an excellent baker, has her own bakery, the unbaked batter, three bakeries

🌟Ask students to use three to five of the words/phrases in a couple of sentences for more experience.

➡My sister thinks she has her own bakery and can bake bread and wedding cakes. I have to tell her that unbaked cake batter doesn't make a good cake.

🌟Read a story about someone baking and look for the words.

We want our kids to be curious, to be thinkers, to ask questions. When they're really engaged, they're asking questions and pursuing those questions.

When working with students, it's always a joy when they ask questions about a word they've noticed on their own or something we're working on together.

Nurture curiosity!

Without question, the favorite way for students to practice suffixing rules like the Doubling Convention is through games.

Of course, they want to win so they are usually more attentive. Students have to think about the reasons we do or do not double a final consonant before adding a vowel suffix:
✅ adding a vowel suffix
✅ the base ends with a single consonant letter that follows a single vowel letter
✅ the stress is on the last syllable (for polysyllabic words)

3 games for variety
🎯Bingo
🎯Go Fish
🎯Wipe Out

This resources includes game cards for both monosyllabic (one-syllable) and polysyllabic (multiple syllable) words.

A lot of my dyslexic students have struggled with spelling coach. Whether it's the OA vowel digraph or choosing between CH & TCH or a C instead of a K, it's taken some practice.

Several years ago, I wondered with a student where this word came from. We were both surprised to make a meaning connection with a carriage or stagecoach vehicle. Neither of us were thinking of that kind of coach.

There's a blog post, A Sweet Insight Brought by Coach, and an updated learning resource available at the Tools for Dyslexia website.

You wouldn't think a person who struggled with adding and multiplication would become an economist. In addition to understanding supply and demand, there's a bit of math rolled into that degree and profession.

Diane Swonk struggled with dyslexia and had difficulty spelling and writing in middle school and high school in addition to early math challenges. But she found her niche in higher-level math and economics.

“Economics was easy and very intuitive, and that’s how my mind works. It was also intellectually stimulating, and I felt like I belonged.”

Encourage your students to find their passions. What clicks for them? What do they want to do but fear they might not be able to do? Support their dreams and inspire them to go for it!
