I was honored to receive NABA’s Michael Winston “Walking the Road Less Traveled” Award, which recognizes accounting professionals who have taken an unconventional path and used their expertise in unique ways.
I can still remember sitting in college realizing that public accounting wasn’t for me and wondering what that meant for my future. At the time, it felt like everyone else had the map and I had somehow missed the meeting where they handed it out.
Since then, my path has included nonprofit finance, teaching accounting, creating financial literacy content, writing a children’s book, and building Your CFO Friend.
Looking back, the common thread has always been helping people understand things that feel complicated.
I’m incredibly grateful to NABA for this recognition and to everyone who has been part of the journey.
And to my mom: I guess all those times I didn’t listen eventually worked out. 😊

Day 1 at the NABA Convention — back after so many years, and it already feels like coming home. Reconnecting with mentors, discovering fresh ideas, and soaking in the energy of a community that lifts you up reminds me why I missed this space. Excited for what's ahead.

I won an award 🏆…
But I’ll tell you more about that later. First I want to tell you about . I’ve known this beautiful lady for years! We go wayyyy back. I tutored her in accounting when she was getting her masters and now my girl is a whole CPA! 🙌🏾 Proud is an understatement. 🥹
I had no idea that she was attending the NABA Convention this year in Las Vegas (and she dint know I would be here)! When I saw her, my entire spirit lit up! I jumped up and down and smiled from ear to ear with excitement. Allah (God) is so good! He knew I needed her in this moment to celebrate, to reconnect, and to experience this together. I immediately relaxed just knowing my dear sister was here. I’m so grateful.
I’ll be back soon with more, but for now, I’m soaking up the black CPA/accountant reunion, staying present, and finding time to work (work) in between! 🥰
He’s a natural! After one week of working with Your CFO Friend, our new Junior Marketing & Content Assistant created his first reel! 👏🏾

“When am I ever going to use this?” she thought to herself in algebra class.
Turns out, the answer was: constantly. Just not in the way they taught us.
Algebra teaches you how to look at a problem, break it into parts, and solve for the unknown. We actually use that every single day.
When you figure out if you can afford the trip. When you stretch a budget across a month that’s longer than the paycheck. When you sit in a board meeting trying to make the numbers make sense.
That’s accounting. That’s finance. You’ve probably been doing it all along — nobody just stopped to name it for you or cheer you on.
That’s what I’m here for.

When I first made the offer… he turned it down 😅
Not because he didn’t want to work, but because he had questions about pay, hours, responsibilities, and still being able to enjoy his summer.
Honestly, I respected it.
This became about more than just a summer job — it turned into real conversations about money, responsibility, communication, and knowing your value.
