What is Federal Work-Study? 💼

If you see "Work-Study" on your financial aid letter, here is how it actually works. It's a part-time job on campus for students who show financial need. It's a great way to earn pocket money to pay for books and personal expenses.

⚠️ The catch: This money isn't taken off your tuition bill upfront. You have to find an eligible campus job, work the hours, and earn it in a regular paycheck just like any other job.

You're Accepted! Now What?

Getting that acceptance letter feels amazing, but your work isn't totally done. Use your summer smarty to prep for day one:

-Keep looking and applying for private, local scholarships.

-Attend your virtual orientation and get your courses picked out.

-Use the summer on purpose: prep for living on your own and getting your dorm gear ready.

Studying in another country, or even applying directly to a college overseas, is an amazing way to see the world, learn a new language, and build a resume that major global companies will love.

Applying to colleges outside the U.S. (like Oxford or Cambridge in the U.K.) means dealing with totally different application systems than the Common App, which can get confusing fast.

You don't have to navigate international admissions alone. College Excellence helps students build application blueprints for top-tier schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Federal Loans (Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized)

If you have to take out federal student loans to help pay for college, you need to understand the difference between your options:

Subsidized Loans: These are need-based, and the best part is they are completely interest-free while you're in school. The government pays the interest for you while you're a student.

Unsubsidized Loans: You don't have to show financial need for these, but interest starts building up the second the loan is paid out. If you don't pay the interest while you're in school, it gets added to your total debt when you graduate.

Preparing Before You Commit Part 2

Ready to make your final college choice official? Here are your final steps:

4. Submit your deposit: Pay your enrollment deposit to lock in your spot.

5. Check the waitlist: If you're holding out for a waitlist school, send a Letter of Continued Interest.

6. Decline other offers: Let the colleges you aren't attending know so they can give those spots to other students.

Need vs. Net Price Equation

Never look at a college's sticker price and assume you can't afford it. Instead, you need to look at these two numbers:

Financial Need: This is the difference between a college’s total Cost of Attendance (COA) and your Student Aid Index (SAI).

Net Price: This is the actual bottom line. It’s what it will cost you to attend for one year after all your scholarships and grants are subtracted. Focus on the Net Price, not the sticker price!

💡 Quick Tip: Building a list of colleges that offer great net pricing is tough. College Excellence specializes in helping families find schools that fit both academically and financially. See how she does it at collegeexcellence.com.

FAFSA Myths Busted Part 3

Myth: You have to wait until your parents finish their tax returns for the current year before you can file the FAFSA.

Truth: The FAFSA uses what is called "prior-prior year" taxes. This means the form looks at tax information from two years ago, which is already completed. The system can automatically import it straight into your form once you give consent.

The FAFSA Deadline is Coming Up

If you are heading to college this fall and haven't finished your financial aid paperwork, this is your wake-up call: the official federal FAFSA deadline is June 30th. If you miss this date, you are giving up your chance at federal grants, work-study, and student loans. Don't wait until the last minute.

What Exactly is an FSA ID? 🔐

Before you can even touch the FAFSA, you need to create an FSA ID. This is your personal username and password that acts as your legal electronic signature to log in and sign your financial aid forms online.

🛑 The #1 Rule: You and your parents must have completely separate FSA IDs. Never share your password or make an account for someone else, or the system will lock you out.
