It was the thirteenth elementary school built in the Alief Independent School District. Rees was named to honor Mr. Flem Rees, who was born on September 2, 1896, in Yoakum, Texas. Rees and his family moved to Alief in 1925, where he served as an AISD Board of Education Trustee from 1934 to 1940. Rees was inducted into the South Central Texas Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.
