BIG NEWS: The wonderful Sergio Trevino will step in to lead our next songwriting workshop on Sunday, April 27.
To hear Sergio play his songs is a thrill, but to learn from him? That’s a gift.
As front man for bands including Buxton and Ancient Cat Society, Sergio has taken his Houston-grown indie folk-pop everywhere. Sergio echoes Paul Simon’s literary eloquence and the Everly Brothers’ sweet pining––but his voice is very much his own. Empathetic and sly, he’ll break your heart and make you laugh, sometimes in the same verse. And don’t get us started on his gorgeous, gut-punching melodies.
Our leader Shawn Parks will help lead and facilitate the conversation. As usual, we’re planning to feed everyone something delicious, too.
👉 This feels like an ideal time to explain why we’ve dropped the “intro” designation from our songwriting workshops:
🐦⬛ Each workshop will be led by a rotating cast of pro songwriters;
🐦⬛ Different teachers mean different perspectives––and that each workshop is a unique opportunity;
🐦⬛ Because of the varying approaches we’ll explore, all skill levels are encouraged to attend (not just beginners);
🐦⬛ Students ages 16 and older are welcome (we’re planning a special workshop for younger writers).
👉 What will you do at a workshop?
🐦⬛ Learn about a pro songwriter’s individual approach to composition;
🐦⬛ Pick up tips for writing melodies and lyrics;
🐦⬛ Spend time writing, either with other participants or alone (your choice!);
🐦⬛ Share your songs (if you want to!).

Our Intro to Songwriting workshop could not have experienced a better launch. A dozen songwriters joined Matt Harlan, Hudson Mueller, and Shawn Parks at Bojangles Heights on Sunday for an afternoon of imagination-spurring exercises, in-depth instruction, lively discussion, sharing, and writing.
Then, there was the tender pulled pork Shawn spent 8 hours smoking the day before the seminar. 🔥 We believe that savoring lovingly prepared food and drink aids the creative process, readying the body and spirit for communing with the mysteries that always surround making up songs.
It was thought-provoking, empowering, and downright inspiring.
Thank you to all who participated! 🙏 The next workshop dates will be announced in the coming week.

Well, the very first Bojangles Open House is in the books. 🌝 We ate hot jambalaya. We drank cold drinks. We watched, listened, and swelled with pride as students ages 10 to 73 got up to jam with an all-star Bojangles instructor band featuring Hunter Perrin, Nick Zamora, and Ian Barry. ✨
We whooped and hollered when Paul Beebe and The Mighty Orq jumped up to play, too.
Thank you all so much for making the first Bojangles Open House so special––and for helping us launch a new tradition! 💙
👉 SAVE THE DATE: The next Bojangles Open House will be Sunday, March 2, 2025.

We’ve been working on something new. 🌞 Introducing…Bojangles Creative Writing!
We are launching creative writing group courses alongside one-on-one private instruction––and we’re pretty excited. Our four 12-week group courses kick off in September at Bojangles Heights.
Each class is designed to be an introduction to creative writing, customized to serve different ages:
📕 3rd - 5th Grade // Creative Writing: An Introduction
📗 6th - 8th Grade // Creative Writing: The Power of Self-Expression
📘 9th - 12th Grade // Creative Writing: The Art of Thinking
📙 Adults (18+) // Creative Writing: Everyone Has a Story
Your instructor will be Elisabeth Carroll Parks, a published writer and editor for more than two decades now––and our founder Shawn’s wife. 💫
You can read Elisabeth’s professional bio on our site, but here are a few highlights: a BA from UT Austin and an MA in English literature from Belmont University in Nashville, plus a stint as director of editorial for BMI. She’s written official bios for a wide range of artists, from blues legend Taj Mahal to comedian Taylor Tomlinson, and contributes to top publications, including Houstonia. She’s also hard at work on a book slated to be published by Texas A&M University Press. Perhaps most importantly, Elisabeth loves mentoring other writers.
Other notes:
📌 For school-aged participants, work outside of class will be minimal. Our kids already have plenty of homework, and these courses are meant to be a creative refuge and break from busy work. We’ll still build valuable skills––we’ll just manage our time well and have fun while we do it.
📌 Class sizes will be capped to ensure every student has a voice. The instructor will read all students’ work and provide detailed written feedback.
📌 Group lessons not your thing? One-on-one sessions, modeled after our award-winning instrument lessons, are available too, during which you can get help with school work, independent creative projects, college admissions essay prep––you name it.
The BCW IG will have key class updates: .
