Huntsville City Schools' students are encouraged to read over the summer break. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of reading, particularly over the longer summer break. Younger students, grades K-5, are encouraged, but not required, to read over the break. A list of recommended books is listed on the district's summer reading program webpage. Students entering 6th grade are required to read a fictional novel of at least 100 pages and give an oral report on that book.
