We Grow Kids ✏️🍎

06/19/2026

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States learned of their freedom.

As we honor this important moment in our nation's history, we continue to learn, reflect, honor, and grow together. β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ’š

Earlier this week, a few of our students from PMHS and SHS gathered at t UIndy to film with Central Indiana Educational Service Center (CIESC) to help tell the story of the new Perry Township Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program. πŸŽ₯

As we prepare to launch this fall, we're working to ensure students, families, businesses, and community members understand the vision behind this program and the opportunities it will create for our students.

By connecting students with local businesses, mentors, and real-world challenges, we're creating experiences that extend learning beyond the classroom and into the community, benefiting not only our students but our schools, businesses, and the future of the Southside as well.

We can't wait to see the ideas our students develop, the partnerships that form, and the impact this program will have for years to come!

Last week at James Whitcomb Riley Success Academy, middle school girls from both Southport and Perry Meridian traded summer break for safety glasses, tools, and hands-on learning.

In partnership with Deeply Ingrained, Girls Camp gave students the opportunity to build, create, problem-solve, and discover new strengths. They learned that girls belong in every space they choose to pursue. They are builders, leaders, innovators, and change-makers, and they are capable of accomplishing incredible things!

The week concluded with a Community Day where students proudly presented their final projects to families, community members, and local leaders, including the mayor.

Thank you to Deeply Ingrained, Joe Shelburn, our sponsors, volunteers, and partners who provided resources, shared their expertise, and poured into these students all week long. Opportunities like this are only possible because of a community that believes in the next generation.

We are so proud of what these girls accomplished this week. We cannot wait to see what Girls Camp grows into next year! β€οΈπŸ’™

Southport High School quarterback perseveres to success 06/10/2026

Just a few weeks ago, Emmanuel "Mannie" Brandon graduated from Southport High School after serving as the Cardinals' starting quarterback and a leader both on and off the field. Now, he is preparing to continue his academic and football career at the collegiate level.

Four years ago, Mannie was an eighth-grade student at the James Whitcomb Riley Success Academy. Recently, he returned to share his story with current students and encourage them to persevere through challenges, just as he did. Sometimes, hearing from someone who has sat in the same seat, faced similar challenges, and found success can make all the difference.

Mannie is an outstanding young man, and we are incredibly proud of all he has accomplished. We are also thankful for the dedicated staff at JWR who pour into students every day, helping them see their potential and build a foundation for success before they reach high school.

His story is a powerful reminder that one chapter does not define a student's future. β€οΈπŸ–€
