Our Friday Feature: Her Story at Cathedral highlights Kelly Sue Doyle ’83.
In 1979, Kelly Sue Doyle walked into the halls of Cathedral High School, ready to make her mark. Her chosen stage was the gymnastics mat—a place where she didn’t just compete, but excelled. By her sophomore year, Doyle had already distinguished herself, alongside her two dedicated teammates, Beth Arbuckle ’83 and Karen Duffy ’83.
But as the state competition approached, only Doyle qualified, transforming her into a “one-woman team” for Cathedral. With coaches Melinda Bundy, Hon. ’94 and Denise Farrell, Hon ’08, guiding her, Doyle faced the challenge that most teams tackle with several athletes—all on her own.
Undaunted, Doyle dazzled the judges and the crowd alike at the 1980-81 State Competition. Not only did she claim the title of First All-Around, but she also captured Gold in every single event—Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor. It was, by all accounts, The Kelly Doyle Show: a testament to hard work, resilience, and the spirit of Cathedral.
Doyle went on to compete in gymnastics at Michigan State University, where she was the first MSU gymnast to be named All-Big Ten in 1984. She opened Gymnastics Unlimited in 1996, and built her current gym on the east side of Indianapolis in 2003.
Kelly Sue Doyle’s legacy at Cathedral goes beyond medals and trophies. Her determination, courage, and trailblazing spirit continue to inspire current and future student-athletes!
With her leading, we shall not tire.
