Today we celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 (more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation), Union Army general Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming that all enslaved persons in Texas were now free. Texas was the most remote of the slave states, and the Emancipation Proclamation was not enforced there until after the Civil War ended in 1865. Today is also a day to celebrate the culture and achievements of African Americans.
