π¨ MYTH: The best college is the most prestigious college.
β
REALITY: The best college is the one where your student can thrive academically, socially, and financially.
As parents, it's easy to focus on rankings and big-name schools.
But a college name alone doesn't determine your child's success.
The best-fit college is one that provides:
π Strong academic opportunities
π° Affordability and scholarship potential
π€ Support and a sense of belonging
π Internships, mentorship, and career opportunities
When evaluating colleges, ask:
β
Will my student thrive here?
β
Can our family comfortably afford it?
β
Will they feel supported and connected?
β
What opportunities will be available beyond the classroom?
Because the goal isn't simply getting into college.
The goal is helping your student build a future they love.

π¨ Parents: One of the biggest college planning mistakes isn't made during senior year.
It's made when building the college list.
Every year, I meet amazing students who have done everything they were supposed to do.
They've earned strong grades, taken challenging courses, participated in extracurricular activities, served their communities, and worked hard to prepare for college.
Yet many families are shocked when admissions decisions and financial aid offers arrive.
Why?
Because a college list is more than a list of schools.
It's a strategy.
Without a thoughtful plan, families often find themselves with:
β Too many highly selective schools
β Limited scholarship opportunities
β Few colleges that fit the family budget
β Not enough options when admissions decisions arrive
Here's the truth:
Getting accepted to college is not the goal.
Getting accepted to a college that is a great fit academically, socially, AND financially is the goal.
A strategic college list can be the difference between:
π Multiple acceptances vs. limited choices
π° Strong scholarship offers vs. unexpected costs
π Confidence and excitement vs. stress and uncertainty
When we help families build a college list, we focus on three key areas:
β
Academic Fit
Where a student is likely to be successful and competitive for admission.
β
Financial Fit
Where scholarship and merit aid opportunities align with the family's goals.
β
Personal Fit
Where a student can thrive, build relationships, and enjoy their college experience.
The most successful college admissions stories don't start with the application.
They start with a well-planned college list.
That's one of the reasons our students have earned more than $29 million in scholarships and financial aid.
We don't leave college admissions to chance. We build a strategy.

MONEY MONDAY πΈ
LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS = REAL MONEY
Most families are searching for the big national scholarships, while thousands of dollars in local scholarships go unclaimed every year.
Why?
Because students never apply.
Community foundation scholarships are one of the best-kept secrets in college funding. These awards are funded by local businesses, organizations, and community leaders who want to invest in students right in their own communities.
WHY THEY MATTER:
β
Smaller applicant pools
β
Less competition
β
Awards from $500 to $5,000+
β
Opportunities many families never discover
START YOUR SEARCH TODAY:
π Google: "[Your City or County] Community Foundation Scholarships"
π Ask your employer's HR department about scholarship programs
π Request a local scholarship list from your school counselor
Here's what we've learned:
The students who win scholarships aren't always the ones with the highest GPAs.
They're the ones who apply.
Our Class 101 students have earned more than $29 million in scholarships and financial aid, and some of those dollars came from local opportunities that other students overlooked.
Remember:
A $1,000 scholarship that takes 30-60 minutes to apply for is worth your time.

π From School Counselor to Class 101 Owner: Why Helping Students Succeed Is Still My Mission
Before I became a Class 101 owner, I spent years as a school counselor and later as a College Access Counselor Lead, helping students prepare for life after high school.
π My focus was always college and career readiness. I worked with students on everything from career exploration and course selection to college applications, financial aid, scholarships, and postsecondary planning.
Every day, I met talented students with big dreams and supportive families who wanted the very best for them. What I learned is that success is rarely about talent alone. The students who achieved the best outcomes often had a plan, consistent guidance, and someone helping them navigate important decisions along the way.
β¨ Thatβs what led me to Class 101.
I wanted to continue doing the work I loved while providing families with a more personalized and strategic approach to college planning. Today, my team and I help students identify their best-fit colleges, maximize scholarship opportunities, strengthen their applications, and create a roadmap for success.
The results from our most recent senior class have been incredible:
π 584+ College Acceptances
π° $29M+ in Scholarships & Financial Aid Awarded
β 98% Accepted to One of Their Top-Choice Schools
College admissions have changed significantly over the years, but one thing remains true: students achieve their best outcomes when they have a clear plan and the right support system behind them.
β€οΈ Helping students succeed was my mission as a school counselor, and it remains my mission today.
If you have a high school student and would like a roadmap for the college admissions process, send us a message. Weβd love to help your family navigate the journey with confidence.

π€β€οΈπ Happy Juneteenth! πβ€οΈπ€
Today, we honor the strength, resilience, and perseverance of those who came before us. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the progress that has been made, the sacrifices that paved the way, and the work that still lies ahead.
As we celebrate freedom, family, and community, may we also take time to reflect on our history and recommit ourselves to creating opportunities for future generations.
Wishing you and your loved ones a meaningful and joyful Juneteenth.

βWhat do college advisors actually do over the summer?β
We get asked this question all the time.
The truth is, summer is often when the biggest college admissions advantages are created.
While many students are taking a break, hereβs what my students and I are working on right now:
β
Brainstorming and outlining college essays, the ones that will actually sound like them and help them stand out
β
Building college lists that balance fit, affordability, scholarship opportunities, and acceptance likelihood
β
Identifying scholarships with fall deadlines so applications are ready to submit the moment they open
β
Reviewing senior year course selections to make sure the transcript tells the strongest possible story
β
Requesting letters of recommendation before teachers become overwhelmed with requests in September
Hereβs what weβve learned after helping hundreds of families navigate the college admissions process:
The students who feel the most confident when school starts are rarely the ones who waited until fall to begin.
Theyβre the students who used June, July, and August intentionally.
Summer is when prepared students pull ahead, not because they work harder than everyone else, but because they start smarter.
When August arrives, they already have a plan.
No scrambling.
No missed deadlines.
No last-minute panic.
Just a clear roadmap for senior year.
If your rising senior doesnβt have a summer plan yet, now is the time to create one.

π Most families spend thousands of dollars on college, yet many walk away from a campus visit without the information they actually need.
A campus tour is not just about seeing beautiful buildings. π« It is about determining whether a college is the right fit academically, socially, and personally for your student.
Before your next visit, remember the 5 P's of a Successful College Visit:
π₯ People
Who did you meet? Were students friendly and engaged? Could you see yourself building relationships there?
π Programs
Does the college offer your intended major, internships, research opportunities, and career support?
π Places
Explore beyond the tour route. Visit the dining hall, library, student center, and surrounding community.
π Possibilities
Ask yourself: What opportunities are available here that will help me grow over the next four years?
β€οΈ Personal Fit
The most important question of all:
Can you truly picture yourself living, learning, and thriving here?
Parents, one of the biggest mistakes we see is taking over the visit. Let your student ask questions, take notes, and share their observations first. Their experience matters most because they are the ones who will be spending the next four years on that campus.
A simple challenge for every student:
Before leaving campus, write down:
β’ 3 things you loved
β’ 2 concerns you have
β’ 1 question that still needs to be answered
This simple exercise can make comparing colleges much easier later.
After helping the Class of 2026 earn 584 college acceptances and more than $29 million in scholarships, we can tell you that choosing the right college isnβt just about rankings. It is about finding the right fit. β
What college campuses are you visiting this summer? Share them in the comments. π
