Missouri is deciding which health issues to prioritize, and that decision depends on who responds. The State Health Assessment survey asks Missourians what health needs matter most where they live. Those answers shape how the Department of Health and Senior Services plans for the years ahead.
The survey is open in English and Spanish. Families deserve a say in the health priorities that affect their neighborhoods.

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in the United States finally learned they were free. Juneteenth honors that freedom and the generations of Black Americans who fought for it and built community in the years that followed.
Today, we honor Juneteenth and the Black neighbors who make Kansas City what it is.

For high school graduates in Kansas City, college access can look completely different depending on which side of the state line they live on, and it comes down to tuition eligibility. In Kansas, students who graduate from a Kansas high school qualify for in-state tuition regardless of immigration status. Missouri charges some of those same students, including those who are undocumented, the international tuition rate, which is often two to three times higher.
For undocumented students, who can’t receive federal or state financial aid despite living their entire lives here, the tuition rate alone decides whether college is within reach. One Kansas graduate told The Beacon that at out-of-state rates she could not have finished her degree. Denying a student an education over paperwork filed when they were children is indefensible, and right now Missouri does exactly that while Kansas sits one lawsuit away from joining it.
The Beacon’s Mary Sanchez reports that a federal judge struck down Nebraska’s nearly identical law this month, and the Kansas legislators behind this spring’s repeal attempt are already drafting the next version.
If you live in Kansas, ask your state senator and representative where they stood on SB 254 and whether they’ll defend in-state tuition when it comes back. If you live in Missouri, ask yours whether they’ll support in-state tuition for students who graduate from Missouri high schools.

Together, we can hold elected officials accountable for fair tuition policies for all students graduating from high schools in our region.
Undocumented Kansas high school graduates find themselves increasingly targeted
Kansas could be the next state sued for its in-state tuition program for undocumented students.

Welcoming means ensuring every newcomer and immigrant family in Kansas City has equal access to city services and a real voice in our community.
KANSAS CITY, WE DID IT!
Thank you to City Councilmember Wes Rogers for his support of this work and for sponsoring Ordinance No. 260506, the Welcoming KC Commission is now official!
We have established this new 12-member advisory body as our vehicle for long-term inclusion. Here is what it will do:
- Strengthen civic engagement and establish a framework for resident-led oversight of inclusive service delivery.
- Bring together district residents and community-based organizations to actively inform city policy.
- Be the primary resident-led body supporting our city’s continued work of Certified Welcoming Status.
Thank you to every advocate, partner and resident who spoke up and shared their story. We are building systems that last and a city where everyone belongs! Together!

RevEd is proud to be one of 120 organizations endorsing the READ Act, a bipartisan federal effort to strengthen literacy instruction and support students who need reading help earlier.
For families, reading support should not depend on who knows what to ask for or how loudly they can advocate. Schools should use clear evidence, identify reading difficulties early, communicate with parents, and make sure students get the support they need.
Thank you to and for including parents and advocacy partners in this work, and for continuing to push federal leaders toward stronger literacy policy.
Literacy is an education issue. It is also a family power issue.

Kansas City’s Latino communities have helped build this city through labor, business, neighborhoods, and generations of students and families in its schools.
But contribution has come with a cost: displacement, exclusion, underrepresentation, and public systems that too often ask Latino families to carry the city without sharing its power.
During Immigrant Heritage Month, we are looking at that history and the future Kansas City owes its Latino communities.

June is Immigrant Heritage Month.
Immigrants are part of Kansas City’s past, present, and future. At a time when many immigrant families are facing fear, political attacks, economic pressure, and increased enforcement activity, it can be hard to know how to support them.
Here is what you can do this month:
⭐Share trusted Know Your Rights resources.
⭐ Support immigrant-owned businesses.
⭐Donate to local legal and family support organizations.
⭐Speak up when immigrants are blamed or targeted.
⭐ If immigration enforcement activity happens near you, stay calm, keep distance, document only if it is safe, and connect people to trusted support.
Immigrant families should not have to face this moment alone.
Celebrate immigrants. Support immigrants. Now more than ever.
