The difference between true allyship and performative allyship is what happens when the pressure is on.

In a 2022 interview with UnboxedKC, Mayor Quinton Lucas praised LGBTQ+ safe spaces, noting their essential role in "upliftment." Fast forward to 2026: facing pressure from right-wing legal groups, Kansas City repealed its ban on conversion therapy. The Mayor cited "legal strategy" and a "repeal and replace" plan to avoid setting bad court precedents.

But who pays the price during this "strategic retreat"? **LGBTQ+ youth.**
Performative allies offer words of upliftment when it's easy, but ask marginalized people to absorb the trauma of political compromise when the fight gets hard. We need leaders who hold the line.

This Wednesday, June 3rd, tune in to a brand new episode of the UnboxedKC podcast. Brittany Tilander responds directly to her recent online conversation with Mayor Lucas regarding the repeal, contrasts it with his recorded statements from our 2022 interview, and explores the real-world impact of treating LGBTQ+ rights as a legal chess match.

It is time to unbox the truth about political compromise and community safety.
