Applicant Toolkit
Early Decision conversations usually focus on admission rates. But the more revealing number on the Common Data Set is the share of the freshman class already filled before regular decision applications are even read.
At many selective schools, ED isn't a small advantage lane; it's where most of the class gets built.
Filling 60%+ of the class through ED (2024–25 CDS):
Davidson — 69%
Emory — 68%
Middlebury — 68%
Bucknell — 67%
Claremont McKenna — 67%
Lehigh — 66%
WashU — 66%
Grinnell — 65%
Bates — 63%
Holy Cross — 62%
Tulane — 62%
Reserving most seats for RD:
UVA — 31%
Case Western — 18%
College of Charleston — 18%
Howard — 6%
Quinnipiac — 6%
UVA is a useful contrast. A student applying RD there competes for about 69% of the class. At Davidson, an RD applicant competes for 31%.
The full table covering 200+ institutions is on the CT Dataverse: Early Decision Enrollment.

Bloom visited Oxford, Mississippi this week and we are IN LOVE with Ole Miss! Southern charm and generous hospitality doesn’t even cover it. With a beautiful campus and amazing programs, we happily place it on our favorite school list. Hotty Toddy, ya’ll

Researchers have spent years pondering what drives college decisions, including older siblings’ choices, campus amenities or even whether the football team just won big.
Now, a new study reveals another influence that matters more than you would expect: The weather on your college tour.
Don’t underestimate drizzle. Researchers at Amherst College found that poor weather on a campus visit actually reduces a student’s likelihood of applying—and the impact is notable, according to a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
"If I apply to 20 schools with a 5% acceptance rate, that's like... basically 100% chance of getting into a top college, right?"

The logic… sort of makes sense? But actually, college admissions doesn't work like a raffle where buying more tickets gets you a win.
Admissions decisions at highly selective schools are correlated: the same things that lead to a "no" at one tend to lead to a "no" at others.
The good news? There's still a lot counselors can do to actually help." (Ethan Sawyer)
