Linguistics at UC San Diego

We are proud to announce that Shai Lynne Nielson successfully defended her dissertation "Late first language acquisition impacts phonological movement production and perception in American Sign Language" on Thursday, June 11. Congratulations, Dr. Nielson!

Congratulations to the ASL Club on their 2nd annual ASL poetry night last week. It was a grand success with over 100 people attending and a wide variety of performers, including students, teachers, Deaf community members and Deaf parents of students.

The participants of LIGN 240, part of our graduate-level field methods course sequence, just wrapped up a successful first quarter learning about the linguistic structure of Comachuén Purépecha (isolate; Michoacán, Mexico). In addition to its focuses on elicitation methodologies, ethics and linguistic documentation and analysis, the course featured language lessons offered by Maestro Eleazar Cruz Reyes. Several of the students will be continuing on with LIGN 241 in the Fall quarter.
