Happy ! Today we want to give a shoutout to UNSM Zoology Curator, Rob Wilson, who recently co-authored a study investigating the origins of the Lincoln, Neb. population of southern flying squirrels. The species is a "Tier-1" species of conservation concerns (Nebraska Threatened Species) due to its small population size and limited distribution in the state. Although more work needs to be done, the study results suggest the Lincoln southern flying squirrel represents a range expansion. Some of UNSM's collection specimens were used as part of the study.

The skies over the north lawn of Hardin Hall just got a little friendlier toward bats with the addition of a bat house. John Carroll, professor of wildlife ecology and management, led a dozen students from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Wildlife Club in building the bat house.
"With the squirrel boxes, it was pretty easy, because everybody thinks flying squirrels are cute, but bats, it might just take a little bit more education," he said. "People get used to seeing stuff like that, and then they realize it's not some kind of spy equipment, and I think that they'll go, 'Yeah, it's kind of cool seeing the bats go in and out of the house,' and I think that people will embrace it."
