Stretching their stills, students showcase their latest designs from Jason Wheeler’s ARCH 327-951 Parametric Modeling & Design course.
The Parametric Modeling & Design course teaches students the basics of parametric modeling by taking them from zero experience to building a fully functional parametric tower including façade design, floors and cores in a short session of 5 weeks with a total of 10 in-class demonstration hours. In this class students learn how to use the parametric modeling software Grasshopper, a visual programming interface integrated in McNeel’s Rhinoceros 3D software.
For the final boards shown here the students were tasked with creating two boards.
1. A Parametric Workflow Diagram to illustrate their knowledge of how their design works parametrically.
2. Rapid Design Iterations, where they were given design constraints and asked to dynamically “flex” their design using parametric controls to quickly and efficiently come up with differing design options. This process included a constraint to stay within a range of floor area sizes, this is showcased by the bar graphs on the left side of the design options.
Parametric modeling and design in architecture is a design approach that utilizes parameters and algorithms to create a set of rules or relationships that define and generate architectural forms and elements. Parameters are variables that can be manipulated, and algorithms are computational procedures that govern the relationships between these parameters. The aim of parametric design is to enable architects to explore a wide range of design possibilities, optimize performance, and respond dynamically to various design constraints and criteria.
Parametric modeling and design is important for architecture students as it fosters creative exploration, design flexibility, efficient iteration, and the development of skills that are increasingly valued in the contemporary architectural landscape. It equips students with the tools to create innovative, precise, and customized designs, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities in their future careers.
Earlier this month, alumni, friends and family gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Robert L. “Bob” Hanna (Class of 1963) and support the creation of a memorial scholarship in his honor.
In this video, Bob's wife shares a few heartfelt words about the transformative impact scholarships can have on students and why supporting future generations was so important to Bob.
Watch her message and learn how the Robert L. "Bob" Hanna Memorial Scholarship will help aspiring architects pursue their education and achieve their dreams.

Creativity is taking shape at our High School Workshop Camp! 🏗️✨
This week, students have been exploring the design process through hands-on studio projects, transforming their ideas into pavilion models that showcase their creativity, problem-solving and design thinking skills.
Tomorrow, they'll share the results of their hard work with family and friends during the camp exhibition. We can't wait to see these future designers present the projects they've developed throughout the week! 👏📐

Dear College of Architecture Alumni and Friends,
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln College of Architecture invites alumni, friends, colleagues and former students to join us in honoring the life and legacy of Robert L. “Bob” Hanna (Class of 1963).
Bob Hanna Celebration Gathering
June 11, 2026 | 3–5 p.m.
Architecture Hall, Gallery
University of Nebraska–Lincoln
You are invited to join other friends of Bob for a “Share, Show & Tell” gathering and to meet Bob’s family. Guests are encouraged to bring memories of Bob to share, along with examples of his artwork, to create an impromptu retrospective exhibition celebrating his life’s work and contributions to architecture.
This gathering reflects the College of Architecture’s remembrance of Robert L. Hanna, who died Jan. 4, 2026, at age 86. A Nebraska alumnus and former faculty member, Hanna taught at the college and remained deeply connected to the profession throughout his career.
Born Feb. 9, 1939, in Ewing, Nebraska, Bob graduated with honors from Grand Island High School before receiving the prestigious Leo A Daly Architectural Scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree in 1963 and earned both AIA and NCARB accreditation, allowing him to practice architecture nationwide.
Efforts are currently underway to permanently endow a scholarship in memory of Bob Hanna to support future generations of College of Architecture students.

Congratulations to recent Interior Design graduates Megan Feeney and Peyton Pruehs, and Assistant Professor Emily Cerny, who recently presented their research at the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) Conference at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as part of the session, "The Future City: Reimagining Built Environments That More Sustainably Support Aging Societies."
The session provided an opportunity to share their work with scholars, researchers and design professionals from across the country while highlighting the impactful research and creative scholarship taking place within our college.
We're proud to see our students and faculty contributing to important conversations about design, research and the built environment. 👏🎉
