Assistant Professor Qiuming Yao is part of an interdisciplinary Husker research team exploring virovory — the phenomenon of organisms eating viruses as a food source — and its potential to combat the growth of toxic algal blooms in water sources.
NSF-funded project explores potential ally against harmful algal blooms
Toxic cyanobacterial blooms can close lakes, contaminate drinking water and pose risks to human health. A new project at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is exploring an unlikely tool for mitigating these blooms: virovory, the phenomenon of organisms eating viruses as a food source.

With a new grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Holland Computing Center recently deployed PLUMAGE, a flexible graphics processing unit-based cyberinfrastructure that will benefit researchers across the disciplinary spectrum.
The research team includes School of Computing professor and HCC director Hongfeng Yu as well as research associate professor of computing Derek Weitzel.
