Did you know that the building we know as Powell Library was once known simply as “the library”? 📚👀

When the iconic building opened in 1929, it served as UCLA’s main library and was officially called Library Hall. It wasn’t until 1966 that it was renamed in honor of Lawrence Clark Powell, UCLA’s chief librarian from 1944 to 1961.

During his tenure, Powell transformed UCLA’s library system from a collection of roughly 400,000 volumes into a world-class research library with more than 1.5 million books. Today, Powell Library remains one of UCLA’s most recognizable landmarks. 💙💛
