UCLA Labor Occupational Safety and Health (LOSH) Program
We improve health and safety conditions for workers in Southern California. LOSH is part of UCLA’s Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE).
LOSH provides bi-lingual (English-Spanish) occupational health and safety education programs.

Did you know that extreme heat kills more people than all other weather-related events combined? Unfortunately, its true - heat can kill and workers are at risk. Yet we know these heat-related deaths are preventable. In honor of 2026 Heat Safety Week (May 18-22), we'd like to highlight the recent trainings we led in collaboration with National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, Heat Safety 101: Preventing Heat Illness on the Job. Check out some moments from these sessions!

Last week, the Cal/OSHA Standards Board took the first step towards banning the fabrication of artificial stone countertops following hours of powerful and heartbreaking testimony from workers, physicians, scientists, and advocates. This marks a critical step in protecting workers from silicosis, an incurable lung and potentially fatal lung disease caused by exposure to silica dust. We must strive to protect all workers from preventable occupational illnesses and ensure that no one has to risk their life to earn a living.
California Steps Closer to Ban on Engineered Stone After Silicosis Surge | KQED California regulators advanced a proposal to ban artificial stone countertops linked to silicosis from toxic silica dust, beginning rulemaking to prohibit engineered stone with more than 1% crystalline silica tied to hundreds of California cases.

LOSH honored this year’s Workers’ Memorial Day alongside our communities at two meaningful events hosted by Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health and National Day Laborer Organizing Network. As we commemorate the lives of every worker injured or killed on the job, we stand with our partners and renew our commitment to ensuring that every worker returns home safely at the end of each day.
Here are some moments from these events, which captured the spirit of the Workers’ Memorial Day slogan: “Mourn the dead and fight for the living.” Thank you to both SoCalCOSH and NDLON for inviting us to be a part of their Workers’ Memorial Day.
