Happy 102nd birthday to Mary Tamura!

Born in 1925 on Terminal Island, Mary was incarcerated at Gila War Relocation Center in Arizona with her family during WWII. She joined the Cadet Nurse Corps at the age of 18 while her family was still behind barbed wire and attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota, as part of the government’s training program to address a wartime nurse shortage. She continued her life of service and nursing career after the war at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose. Mary’s brother was a member of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and her husband Robert served in the Military Intelligence Service.

Thank you, Mary, for your service!

The Go For Broke Plaza & First Street North Residences stand as a successful public, private, and nonprofit model for other communities to replicate. Thanks to the efforts of our partner Little Tokyo Service Center, 248 affordable housing units, retail and commercial space, and a permanent home for Go For Broke National Education Center will now be a vibrant part of the expanded Little Tokyo footprint.

For over three decades, our founding Nisei veterans envisioned an interpretive center adjacent to the Go For Broke Monument. Slated for completion in late 2026, the project provides vital programming space and partnership opportunities so that we can continue to inspire local and national audiences about the contributions of the Nisei WWII soldiers to our democracy. For the past 27 years, on the first weekend in June, Go For Broke National Education Center has celebrated the June 5, 1999 dedication of the Go For Broke Monument to the City of Los Angeles. Our founding Japanese American World War II veterans wanted to ensure that the legacy of the more than 33,000 Japanese American men and women who bravely served during World War II would be forever remembered as an important American story.

Hosted by actor, writer, and comedian, and host of GFBNEC’s “Living the Nisei Dream” series, Sierra Katow, this special video tribute highlights the veterans’ courage and selfless service and our organization’s continuing fulfillment of their vision through nationwide programming and outreach. Learn more about another transformative achievement with the opening of the new Go For Broke Plaza later this year, which will include a permanent home for Go For Broke National Education Center, as well as legacy businesses like Suehiro Cafe and 248 affordable housing units.
