Parenting Tips

Feeling bad about the way you acted won't help you stop acting that way in the future...

We can set "target behaviors" for ourselves as well as our children. For instance, whenever you want to STOP doing something (i.e. "I want to stop yelling") simply describe in detail what it is that you WANT to do when you would normally find yourself yelling. Perhaps you want to speak "slow and low." Or maybe you want to "turn around and leave the room." Or perhaps you want to tightly close your lips. Decide what it is, practice it in your own mind and then try it out in real life. Adjust your target behavior as necessary.

Parenting Tips

You won't always be there or be able to solve your child's problems. In fact, not all problems have solutions and many don't need to be solved....

A child may want YOU to make her feel better. "The teacher isn't nice to me," "The kids are picking on me," "There's nothing to doooooo," etc. means "Tell the teacher to be nice to me," "Make the kids stop picking on me," "Give me something good to do," and so on. While there are times when you are, in fact, needed to solve a problem for your child, there are also times when it may be more appropriate to show the child ways that she can ease her own stress. After all, having this skill will lead her to a far happier and less-distressed adulthood. Acknowledge her frustration, disappointment, anger or other pain and then tell her that when we're upset we can either stay that way for a long time or we can feel better almost immediately by intentionally lifting our mood. Teach her a couple of mood-lifters to draw on (see the next post for suggestions!).
