The voice behind Steppenwolf and one of the most recognisable openings in rock history… “Get your motor runnin’…”

Born April 12, 1944 in East Prussia during the final months of World War II, John Kay entered the world into chaos with his father being killed just weeks before he was born.

As Soviet forces advanced, his mother fled with him as an infant through brutal winter conditions. In 1949 they risked everything again, crossing the heavily fortified border out of East Germany to start over in the British occupied zone of Hanover in West Germany.

At 14 his journey continued across the Atlantic, first to Toronto, Canada. Teachers struggled with his real name, instead calling him John K, before his family moved to Buffalo, New York, 5 years later. Here he was granted US citizenship.
