Aging school infrastructure creates more than maintenance challenges. It can also increase risk for students, faculty, staff and the communities these buildings serve.
As this article notes, many schools require critical upgrades to core building systems. While HVAC, roofing, electrical and plumbing updates remain essential, physical security is a critical component of long-term modernization and risk mitigation planning.
For K-12 schools, colleges and universities, retrofit security glazing systems offer a practical way to strengthen existing doors, windows and vulnerable glass openings without requiring full window replacement.
When incorporated into a layered security plan, these systems can help delay forced entry during active shooter events, support emergency response and provide additional time to protect occupants.
Caring for aging schools requires a comprehensive approach: maintaining building systems, planning for todayโs security risks and improving the safety and security of the learning environment.

As organizations continue evaluating security risks within public-facing environments, bullet-resistant countertop barriers and transaction windows are becoming an important part of layered interior protection strategies.
Applications such as drive-thru windows, reception counters, pharmacies, government service areas, schools, healthcare facilities and cash-handling environments often require secure communication while maintaining visibility and operational efficiency.
Impact Securityโs transaction window systems are designed to support these environments with multiple configuration options, including fixed transaction windows, sliding transaction windows, sliding windows with transaction drawers and speak-through transaction windows.
These systems help create protected interaction points without completely separating staff from the public.
Many ballistic-resistant transaction systems are designed and tested to recognized standards such as UL 752 and NIJ ballistic criteria, helping organizations evaluate protection levels based on anticipated threat conditions and operational needs.
UL 752 remains one of the most widely referenced standards for bullet-resistant glazing and transaction security systems within commercial and institutional facilities.

The tragic violence that occurred yesterday at the Islamic Center of San Diego is heartbreaking. Places of worship and schools should always remain spaces of peace, learning, and communityโnot fear.
โWe have learned from that at least one person was killed by a shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego today,โ the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) shared in a post on X. โNo one should ever fear for their safety while attending prayers or studying at an elementary school.โ See link below to read the full news article.
Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the entire San Diego community during this difficult time.

When glass breaks, the threat is not just shattered glass โ it is the rapid access it creates for unlawful entry. Impact Security developed RiotLiteโข as a retrofit security window film system engineered to strengthen existing glass and help delay forced entry during smash-and-grab crimes, riots, vandalism, and other physical security threats.
Applied directly to the interior surface of existing glass, RiotLiteโข uses a multi-layer laminate system designed to absorb impact, hold broken glass together, and slow intrusion attempts. Independently tested to ASTM F3561 Level 3 performance standards, the system helps provide critical response time for occupants, security personnel, and law enforcement.
RiotLiteโข can retrofit existing storefronts, doors, and windows while maintaining visibility, daylighting, and architectural appearance. Ideal applications include retail storefronts, schools, offices, government facilities, and commercial buildings seeking enhanced physical security and forced-entry delay protection.

A recent Security Magazine article by Dr. Chris Pierson highlights a critical shift in risk facing healthcare leadership.
Itโs no longer just about cyber threats or organizational liability.
๐ดโคExecutives are increasingly exposed at a personal level
๐ดโคDigital vulnerabilities are translating into physical risk
๐ดโค Public frustration is becoming targeted behavior
In healthcareโand beyondโthis raises an important question:
What happens when leadership becomes the point of vulnerability?
For security professionals and facility leaders, this is not just a cybersecurity issue. Itโs a built environment and protection strategy challenge.
Executive protection is evolvingโand so must the way buildings, access points, and interior spaces are secured.
"According to Allied Universalโs 2025 World Security Report, which surveyed 2,352 corporate security leaders at global organizations representing more than $25 trillion in combined revenue:
42% report a significant increase in threats of violence against company executives..."
