Vocabulary development is part of what ALP tutors do. “Shuck” is a word that often pops up in our word lists (2 digraphs and a short vowel), but many of the students don’t know what it means. The beginning of summer offered a great opportunity for some hands on learning for one of our students!

Struggling readers avoid reading and fall farther behind, while good readers read more and get even better. The reading gap expands. Help vulnerable children close the gap. Learn more about volunteering with us at our website or click the link in the comments.

Maxine began with a heart for students struggling to read and a love for her community. Upstate South Carolina had plenty of children who needed skilled reading tutoring, but most of them didn't have access to expensive schooling or tutoring services. Her search for a solution led her to North Carolina's Augustine Literacy Project, and in 2006, she traveled to Raleigh for training and returned to start our local chapter -- Augustine Literacy Project of the Upstate. Thankful that 20 years later ALP Upstate is still serving under-resourced Upstate families, Maxine encourages, "Keep up the good work!"

We’re still excited from last week’s Greenville Women Giving annual meeting and grant awards presentation! What an inspiring evening celebrating 20 years of impact and partnership. Thank you to everyone who voted for us to support literacy in the Upstate. Interested in making a difference? We have volunteer tutor training opportunities this summer. Join us and change a life through literacy this fall!

Train this summer to change a life this fall. Become an Augustine Literacy Project tutor and equip a struggling reader with the skills they need to thrive. July and August trainings are open now — link in the comments.
Because of a generous grant from Greenville Women Giving, Augustine Literacy Project Upstate will hire a program coordinator who will recruit and train more tutors and match them quickly with students. This means more kindergarten through third grade students who are living in poverty and struggling to read will receive twice weekly, one on one tutoring that builds both reading skills and confidence. We are deeply grateful to Greenville Women Giving for investing in our students, their families, and our community.
