Educating, Equipping, & Encouraging Families with ADHD

06/16/2026

The dread of learning loss is real, but forcing an ADHD brain to sit down and do traditional school worksheets in July is a recipe for a meltdown.

Good news: You can keep those executive function skills sharp through everyday, high-interest activities.

Cooking together: Builds working memory, sequencing, and math.

Family board games: Teaches impulse control, turn-taking, and strategic thinking.

Audiobooks or Graphic Novels: Keeps language skills active without the pressure.

You aren’t slacking on education; you’re just gamifying it!

The tool? External visual and auditory cues. (Think: visual checklists, phone alarms, and fun timers).

When we constantly repeat instructions ("Put your shoes on... I said put your shoes on..."), it strains our relationship with our kids and feeds into executive dysfunction. It feels like nagging.

But when a timer goes off, or a checklist shows what’s next, the tool becomes the boss, not you. It removes the power struggle and shifts the ownership over to your child.

Try it: Set up these neutral cues so your summer mornings can run on autopilot.

When we try to micro-manage every minute of a summer day, we usually end up playing the role of an exhausted drill sergeant. Kids resist, parents get frustrated, and the summer vibes vanish.

Instead of a strict timeline, aim for a predictable daily rhythm.
Think of it in blocks: Morning Routine ➡️ Active/Outdoor Time ➡️ Quiet Time ➡️ Afternoon Adventure. Your child still gets the predictability their brain craves to feel safe, but you get the flexibility required to actually enjoy your summer.

When the structure of the school year disappears overnight, it’s completely normal for your child’s emotional regulation to take a hit. Without a predictable schedule, that ADHD brain can go into overdrive—leading to more meltdowns, endless screen-time battles, and total exhaustion for you.

But summer doesn't have to be a 3-month survival match. You can protect your peace and help your child thrive by focusing on just a few core pillars:
•Creating a flexible, daily rhythm (not a rigid schedule!)
•Gamifying transition times
•Prioritizing high-energy brain stimulation

I’ve put together a complete ADHD Summer Survival Guide to help you navigate the next few months with confidence. Click the link in my bio or comment SUMMER to read the full blog post! ☀️
