During the first lab of the Introduction to Surgical & Autopsy Pathology course, our first-year students jump right into a hands-on “Skills Lab” experience. For many, this is their first time practicing essential grossing techniques!
Using a variety of food items as stand-ins for real specimens, students learn how to ink external surfaces, sample resection margins in multiple orientations, create even serial sections, and trim tissue to fit into cassettes - the same techniques used to prepare real tissue samples for histologic evaluation.
These foundational skills build confidence and precision, helping ensure our students are well prepared to transition to working with actual specimens in the lab.

Our first-year students took a break from lecture to get a little creative - building kidneys out of craft materials to actively study and reinforce the anatomical structures of the organ. For a hands-on profession like ours, sometimes the best way to learn anatomy is to get crafty!
