Congratulations to MSCTI Class of 2023 alum Barbara Junco on two incredible milestones!
Since graduating from the program, Barbara has published two first-author papers: "Long-Term Brain Fog and Cognitive Impairment in Previously Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients" (2024) and "Cognition and Psychomotor Vigilance in Treated Sleep Apnea Patients With and Without Daytime Sleepiness: The MAGNETO Study" (2026).
Barbara has also been accepted into the Ph.D. program in Clinical Health Psychology at the University of Miami, where she is a recipient of the McKnight Doctoral Fellowship, a prestigious award designed for the growing the pool of Ph.D.-qualified scholars prepared to teach at the university level.
This is what the MSCTI is all about: building a research workforce that is ready to lead. We could not be more proud, Barbara!

We are proud to spotlight Dr. Erin Kobetz, Ph.D., M.P.H., Co-Director and MPI of the Miami CTSI, in this feature from University of Miami Miller School of Medicine magazine.
An epidemiologist by training, Dr. Kobetz serves as associate director for community outreach and engagement at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and co-director of the University of Miami Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The article highlights her research into the link between Superfund sites and cancer risk, and how community engagement drives that work. As she puts it, "My entire career has been grounded in translational research that emphasizes the importance of community engagement."
That commitment is exactly what drives the MSCTI, the CTSI's signature graduate program training the next generation of clinical and translational researchers at the University of Miami.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Sabita Roy, Professor of Surgery at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Rojas explored the intersection of surgical care and microbiome science. Dr. Rojas currently serves as an Associate Professor, Breast Surgical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Texas UT MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Congratulations, Dr. Rojas. The field is better for your curiosity and dedication!

The CTSI's Chin Chin Lee, Director, Research Support Resources and Services, recently joined the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center's Cancer Survivorship Celebration at Dolphin Mall, where survivors, families and caregivers came together to mark the milestones that matter most.
The event highlighted that survivorship is a journey, not a destination. Attendees connected with resources spanning exercise, nutrition, music therapy and more, all designed to support life beyond treatment.
Our participation in events like these reflect the CTSI's commitment to bringing University of Miami health research and support opportunities directly into the community where people live.

Mentored by Dr. Litsa Lambrakos, Associate Professor of Medicine in Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Dr. Shaukat’s work tackles a critical gap in cardiovascular research for an underrepresented population.
Congratulations, Dr. Shaukat, on this tremendous achievement. We can't wait to see the impact of your work!
