🧠 Exploring the fundamentals of AI and machine learning at FIU BME!
Yesterday, students, faculty and researchers gathered at MMC for “AI & ML Essentials,” a session led by Simone Innocente, a visiting scholar in the lab of Jessica Ramella-Roman, Ph.D., within FIU Biomedical Engineering. The presentation introduced key concepts behind artificial intelligence and machine learning, covering learning paradigms, classic algorithms and the machine learning pipeline.
From supervised learning to neural networks, attendees gained a practical overview of the tools and techniques that are increasingly shaping scientific research and innovation.
Thank you to Simone for sharing his expertise and representing FIU BME, and to everyone who joined us for an engaging discussion on the foundations of AI and ML.

🧠 Inspiring the next generation of scientists!
On May 28, FIU Biomedical Engineering partnered with Campbell Drive Middle School for a neuroscience outreach event hosted as a satellite session of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping’s Brain Mappers of Tomorrow initiative.
Led by three FIU undergraduate students under the supervision of Kangjoo Lee, Ph.D., the session featured interactive activities that introduced 7th and 8th grade students to how the brain learns, remembers and experiences the world around us.
The students were engaged, curious and full of great questions—and our FIU volunteers left inspired to continue making an impact through STEM outreach.
We look forward to growing this initiative in the years ahead!

We couldn’t wrap up Spring 2026 without celebrating our BME Seniors and the impressive projects they brought to this semester’s College of Engineering and Computing Senior Design Showcase 🎉
Held on April 17 at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center, eight Biomedical Engineering Senior Design teams presented their work—sharing research posters and prototypes with attendees while showcasing their creativity, technical skills, and teamwork.
We closed out the day with an awards ceremony recognizing our Honorable Mention, Third, Second, and First Place teams 👏
And to top it all off, two BME teams earned collegewide recognition for Outstanding Senior Design Project and Innovative Senior Design Project—standing out among 123 teams across the college.
We’re so proud of our students and everyone who helped make this showcase happen.
