How to Form a Union 06/20/2026

How to Form a Union Organizing a union in your workplace is about building collective power and getting the things you and your co-workers need such as better wages, better benefits, and better working conditions. Thousands of working people—all across the country and in all kinds of jobs—organize unions every year...

marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the United States finally learned they were free. More than two years had passed since the Emancipation Proclamation. Freedom had been declared, but it had not yet reached everyone. That's why this date matters. It reminds us that rights only matter when people can actually exercise them.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a reflection. It celebrates the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history while reminding us that progress has never happened on its own. Every step toward equality has required people willing to stand together, speak up, and demand better.

That idea should sound familiar to union members. The labor movement has always been about giving working people a voice and the power to improve their lives. We celebrate Juneteenth because freedom, dignity, fairness, and opportunity are values worth fighting for. They were worth fighting for then and they are worth fighting for now.

Some elected officials make time for labor because it's expected. Congressman André Carson makes time because he genuinely cares about doing everything he can to help the working people of Indiana.

During the 2026 CWA Legislative Conference, our members had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Carson and discuss the challenges facing workers today. One of those challenges was the rise of AI and the very real impact it is already having on jobs and working families. What stood out wasn't just that he asked about it. He genuinely wanted to understand it. He listened, asked thoughtful questions, and sought ideas on how we can protect workers as technology continues to reshape our economy.

That commitment is nothing new. Congressman Carson has built a reputation as a consistent advocate for working families and organized labor. That's exactly why CWA District 4 was proud to present him with our People's Champion Award earlier this year. It wasn't given for one vote or one speech. It was earned through years of standing with workers when it mattered most.

Thank you, Congressman Carson, for your continued partnership, your leadership, and your unwavering commitment to the people you serve. We are grateful for your friendship and proud to stand alongside you in the mission to improve the lives of working families and build a more perfect union.
