South Division High School

We were honored to host a celebration of life for Mr. Luis Lopez. Mr. Lopez was the first bilingual (Spanish/English) teacher at South Division HS and his contributions as well as of those that were present at the event yesterday helped grow the program and made significant contributions to the field of bilingual education. Huge thank you to WIABE for partnering with South Division HS to provide this amazing tribute to Mr. Luis Lopez and to Gloria Gonzalez for spearheading the effort.

Fue un honor para nosotros el ayudar a organizar una celebración de la vida del Sr. Luis López. El Sr. López fue el primer maestro bilingüe (español/inglés) de la escuela preparatoria South Division; sus contribuciones —así como las de muchas de las personas presentes en el evento de ayer— ayudaron a desarrollar el programa y aportaron avances significativos al campo de la educación bilingüe. Agradecemos enormemente a WIABE por colaborar con la escuela South Division para rendir este maravilloso homenaje al Sr. Luis López y a Gloria González por liderar la iniciativa.

Yesterday, we held our yearly, End of the Year Celebration. We celebrated our many accomplishments as a school community, recognized our retirees and a couple staff members that are moving out of state. We also provided recognitions to our "Shoulder to Shoulder" award recipients: Ms. Courtney Chavez, Ms. Tameka Keeler and Ms. Tial Van Mawi. We also presented a Volunteer of the Year Award, to Genoveva Burgos. We then had our annual potluck and enjoyed each other's company. We have built an amazing school community at South Division!

Ayer celebramos nuestra fiesta anual de fin de año. Conmemoramos los numerosos logros alcanzados como comunidad escolar y rendimos homenaje a quienes se jubilan, así como a algunos miembros del personal que se trasladarán a otro estado. También entregamos reconocimientos a las ganadoras del premio "Hombro con Hombro" (Shoulder to Shoulder): la Srta. Courtney Chavez, la Sra. Tameka Keeler y la Srta. Tial Van Mawi. También entregamos el premio a la Voluntaria del Año a Genoveva Burgos. Posteriormente, compartimos una comida comunitaria y disfrutamos de la compañía de todos. ¡Hemos construido una comunidad escolar extraordinaria en South Division!

Milwaukee student overcomes obstacles to graduate as salutatorian A South Division High School senior, who immigrated from Pakistan at 16, is graduating as salutatorian and heading to UW-Madison on a full-ride scholarship.

Our 12th grade students are getting ready for graduation! Today, our students were provided with a graduation rehearsal breakfast and participated in many of our now, traditional graduating 12th grade activities. We also had the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women-Milwaukee chapter stop by to present two scholarships to two of our amazing Seniors!

¡Nuestros estudiantes de 12.º grado se están preparando para la graduación! Hoy, a nuestros estudiantes se les ofreció un desayuno de ensayo de graduación y participaron en muchas de nuestras ya tradicionales actividades para los estudiantes que se gradúan de 12.º grado. También recibimos la visita del capítulo de Milwaukee de la Conferencia Nacional de Mujeres Puertorriqueñas, que entregó dos becas a dos de nuestros increíbles estudiantes del grado 12.

Today, we celebrated our NAF Track Graduates and presented 2 scholarships to two of the students that are graduating NAF Certified. A NAFTrack Certification is an employability credential that serves as NAF’s seal of college and career readiness to help NAF students and alumni stand out in a pool of job applicants. This year's South Division NAF Scholarship recipients are Betzy Cortez Roman and Oscar Delgado Gomez. Each student received a $500 scholarship made possible through the generosity of our South Division NAF Advisory Board members. We have a staggering 41 students graduating NAFTrack Certified this year.

Hoy celebramos a los graduados del programa NAF Track y otorgamos dos becas a estudiantes que se gradúan con la certificación NAF. La certificación NAFTrack es una credencial de empleabilidad que sirve como sello de NAF de preparación universitaria y profesional, ayudando a los estudiantes y exalumnos de NAF a destacar entre los candidatos a un empleo. Los beneficiarios de la beca NAF de South Division de este año son Betzy Cortez Roman y Oscar Delgado Gomez. Cada estudiante recibió una beca de 500 dólares, posible gracias a la generosidad de los miembros del Consejo Asesor de NAF de South Division. Este año, la impresionante cifra de 41 estudiantes se gradúa con la certificación NAFTrack.

This past Thursday, we held our end of year recital. Our music program continues to expand. This was our first year with a band and orchestra class. Check out some of the performances from the recital. Huge thank you to our amazing music teachers, Mr. Landeros and Mr. Ramos. We are proud of our students' growth!

El pasado jueves, celebramos nuestro recital de fin de año. Nuestro programa de música continúa creciendo y mejorando. Este fue nuestro primer año con una clase de banda y una de orquesta. The South Division HS Drumline joined the Puerto Rican Festival & Parade this morning. We are proud of our multicultural and multilingual student body!

La línea de percusión de South Division HS se unió esta mañana al Festival y Desfile Puertorriqueño. ¡Estamos orgullosos de nuestro alumnado multicultural y multilingüe!

We recently celebrated our over 30 students that are graduating with the Seal of Biliteracy with a parent dinner and ceremony. The Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy is an official, state-recognized credential awarded to graduating high school students who have demonstrated high proficiency in English and one or more additional languages. South Division tied another school for the highest number of Seals of Biliteracy earned in the district. We are very proud of our students!

Recientemente celebramos a nuestros más de 30 estudiantes que se gradúan con el Sello de Bilingüismo mediante una cena para padres y una ceremonia. El Sello de Bilingüismo de Wisconsin es una credencial oficial reconocida por el estado que se otorga a los estudiantes de último año de preparatoria que han demostrado un alto nivel de dominio del inglés y de uno o más idiomas adicionales. South Division empató con otra escuela en la mayor cantidad de Sellos de Bilingüismo obtenidos en el distrito. ¡Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros estudiantes!

Our students did an amazing job at the MPS STEAM Fair. Two of our students were awarded with 2nd Place for Grades 9-12, Science Inquiry. South Division High School also won 1st and 2nd place at last year's STEAM Fair. Congrats to our amazing scholars and our amazing science teacher, Mrs. Irma Borrero!

Nuestros estudiantes hicieron un trabajo increíble en la Feria STEAM de MPS. Dos de nuestros estudiantes fueron galardonados con el 2.º lugar en Investigación Científica para los grados 9-12. South Division también obtuvo el 1.º y 2.º lugar en la Feria STEAM del año pasado. ¡Felicitaciones a nuestros increíbles estudiantes y a nuestra extraordinaria maestra de ciencias, la Sra.
