Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest difference.
A participant in the Virtual Dementia Tour® by Second Wind Dreams® shared this after their experience:
“I have been much more aware of the person’s environment when undertaking an assessment. I look for anything that can impact the individual’s ability to engage. Televisions are a big issue, many times I have asked if a television could be turned down, now I ask if they can be turned off. Overall, I think the training made me more aware of the surrounding influences and allowing adequate time.”
Dementia doesn’t just affect memory: it changes how a person experiences the world around them. That’s why AdviseWell is bringing the VDT® to communities across Southeast Louisiana. To help caregivers, families, and professionals to build understanding through experience; and translate empathy into action and better care.

Louisiana farmers markets are overflowing with hydrationrich produce right now: watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes, peaches, squash, and berries. These foods help support energy, reduce confusion, and restlessness for people living with dementia.
Hydration doesn’t have to be forced and come from a cup. Seasonal produce makes it natural.
Grab something fresh at your local farmers market this week; it’s an easy way to brighten the day!

This Father's Day, we asked daughter Maria Francisca Liaño Bascuñana: “What is one thing about your dad that Alzheimer's can never take away?”

“Alzheimer’s is a cruel shadow that steals memories away, but I have learned that family connection and the feeling of home are the brightest lights in delaying its progress. Dad, your journey taught me that, even when the mind begins to fade, the soul always recognizes those who never let go of your hand.”
A dementia diagnosis may change many things. But it cannot erase a lifetime of love, lessons, and memories. The impact our fathers and father figures have on our lives continues through the stories we tell and the people we become.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful words Maria.
What is one thing you'll always carry with you from your dad or a father figure in your life?

Father’s Day is a time to celebrate dads and father figures who have shaped our lives. For families affected by dementia, it can also be a reminder that while memory and abilities may change, the person we love is still there.

This week tip is simple: focus on the person, not the disease. Include dad in conversations, invite him to participate in family activities, continue treating him with the same dignity and respect you’ve always known him to deserve. Sometimes the most meaningful gift isn’t a present: it’s making someone feel seen, valued, and included.

What was your dad's favorite hobby or activity? Better yet, is there a way you can enjoy it together this Father's Day?
