This past April, two Audubon Aquarium staff members, Ashley and Dr. Schisa, joined Mississippi State University Marine Fisheries Ecology on a research vessel off the coast of Alabama as part of a staff conservation grant funded by Audubon Nature Institute.
The grant supported the deployment of 10 acoustic trackers to study juvenile tiger sharks - an important keystone species in Gulf ecosystems. Despite their ecological importance, little is known about their early life stages, making this research critical for long-term conservation efforts.
During the expedition, the team assisted with longline setup, data and specimen collection, blood sampling, and safe shark handling and ventilation. Over 60 specimens were documented and released, including more than 40 sharks spanning multiple species such as great hammerhead, scalloped hammerhead, sharpsnose, sandbar, and tiger sharks.

We’re excited to unveil ChamäleTuna, an interactive light art installation by artist Ilya Sobol, created in partnership with Arts New Orleans and Downtown Development District of New Orleans. 💡 🐟
Inspired by the shape of a tuna fish and the color-changing abilities of a chameleon, ChamäleTuna uses interactive technology to transform based on the colors worn by visitors. Your outfit becomes part of the artwork as the installation shifts and evolves in real time!
More than a dazzling light display, ChamäleTuna celebrates the diversity, creativity, and connection that make New Orleans so unique.
Stop by, see yourself reflected in the artwork, and become part of the experience! ChamäleTuna is on view nightly from sunset–10 p.m. at the entrance of Audubon Aquarium.

Today is World Sea Turtle Day, and we’re shellabrating by spotlighting the incredible work of Audubon Aquarium Rescue! 🐢
Audubon Aquarium Rescue (AAR) is Louisiana’s primary responder for stranded sea turtles and marine mammals. These animals can become sick, injured, disoriented, or entrapped, requiring help from authorized responders like AAR to return safely to their natural habitats. AAR is the only program in the state authorized to rehabilitate live sea turtles and marine mammals.
AAR's mission is to provide expert care, promote ocean conservation, and engage our community through education.
We'd like to remind the public that if you encounter a sick, injured, or stranded marine mammal or sea turtle (live or dead) call Audubon Aquarium Rescue at (877) 942-5343.
