The NYCI was founded in the Spring of 2000 by Irene Diamond and Peter Martins.

The Institute promotes the development of choreographers and dancers involved in classical choreography by providing opportunities to develop their talents.

The Art and Artists of the Latest Institute Session | New York City Ballet 06/16/2023

Following its spring tradition, the New York Choreographic Institute united emerging choreographers with composers studying at Juilliard school and The School of American Ballet students to create three new works for the 2023 Spring Session.

Spring 2019 Session 04/10/2019

Choreographers Nayon Iovino, Mariana Oliveira, and Alysa Pires work with advanced students from the School of American Ballet during the Spring 2019 Session of the New York Choreographic Institute. As in each Spring Session, the choreographers worked with students from the Juilliard School to create original scores for their ballets. Fall 2018 Session 11/29/2018

Choreographers Preston Chamblee, Sophie LaPlane, and Mari Meade work with New York City Ballet members and advanced students from The School of American Ballet during the Fall 2018 Session of the New York Choreographic Institute. As in each Fall Session, the choreographers worked with graduates from NYU Tisch School of the Arts to create original costumes and lighting designs. This year's costume designers were Matthew Lott, Mariko Ohigashi, and Avery Reed. This year’s lighting designers were Ted Boyce-Smith, Amanda Clegg Lyon, and Christopher Thielking.

Fall 2017 Session 12/06/2017

Choreographers Andrew McNicol, Craig Davidson, and Silas Farley work with New York City Ballet members and advanced students from The School of American Ballet during the Fall 2017 Session of the New York Choreographic Institute. As in each Fall Session, the choreographers worked with graduates from NYU Tisch School of the Arts to create original costumes and lighting designs. This year's costume designers were Lily Prentice, Kat Jeffries, and Ilana Breitman. This year’s lighting designers were Reza Behjat, Kate, Jennifer Hill, and McGee.
