Town Hall: What's Changing for Student Loan Borrowers and How We Fight Back Open to Everyone: Town Hall on Student Debt On July 1, some of the harshest changes to the federal student loan system in decades take effect. Yesterday, Thursday, June 11, PSC members joined students and advocates from the CUNY Rising Alliance for a CUNY at the Council day of action!

We talked with Councilmembers on their way into the bimonthly Stated meeting, sharing our platform for a fully-funded City University of New York system and asked that they prioritize our membersโ€™ and studentsโ€™ needs in the ongoing city budget negotiations. We will continue organizing with our partners for robust CUNY funding in the city budget, toward our goal of winning a CUNY for all.

โ€œAs one of the CUNY Fired Four, it is an incredible honor to see our collective struggle, led by the PSC-CUNY, student organizers, and the broader CUNY community, inspire the Academic Freedom Protection Act. This bill is essential to ensure that no other educator loses their job for exercising their conscience, whether in solidarity with Palestinian liberation or the liberation struggles of other oppressed peoples, speaking out against racist police violence and fascist ICE attacks on our immigrant communities, defending LGBTQIA+ rights, or organizing for union rights. Academic freedom is not a privilege; it is a right, and I urge all of my union siblings to fight for its passage.โ€

โ€œThe message from our movement must be very clear; pension funds, university endowments, everyday investors must not invest in billionaire-owned corporations that drive inequality, economic instability, and attacks on working people.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not paying for their trillions, not with our pensions, not on our watch!โ€
