Beauford Delaney was a great modernist painter of the Harlem Renaissance & found freedom in 1940’s New York to explore life as a gay man. A close friend of James Baldwin, Delaney inspired his writing and spiritual outlook–"Well, that life, that light, that miracle are what I began to see in Beauford’s paintings, and this light began to stretch back for me over all the time we had known each other, over much more time than that, with the power to illuminate, even to redeem and reconcile and heal."⠀
