Keeping our city safe means protecting NYers from extreme heat. With temps forecasted to go above 90 degrees this week anyone over 18 can visit an New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firehouse and request a spray cap to legally and safely cool down!

Looking for ways to beat the heat? Your local firehouse can install a temporary spray cap on your nearest fire hydrant.

You must be 18+ years of age and show ID. When using a spray cap, stay alert and be mindful of traffic.

In celebration of Black History Month, we’re shining a big headlight on Donavan Etienne, an Auto Service Worker for FDNY’s Fleet Services. You can say he keeps things rolling. He handles the daily repairs and maintenance for the engines, ensuring each rig is ready to respond before it’s put back in service. “I still don’t believe I work here. This has been unlike any job I’ve ever had. They treat you like family. Like if you have any issues, you come here and they’ll help you,” said Etienne. Etienne is a third-generation mechanic, following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. He joined the FDNY in May of 2020. “It’s an amazing feeling to work at the FDNY because people look up to you,” said Etienne. “When I’m driving the truck, the kids smile and wave because they love fire trucks. I turn on the lights and it brightens their whole day.” #blackhistorymonth
