Greene Hill School. Independent. Progressive. Pre-K to 8th. Our students love learning together. We value the journey of a child’s explorations.

Education at Greene Hill School

Greene Hill School is a progressive school with an emphasis on community. Young children play to understand their world, and as children grow, first hand experience continues to shape learning at our school. We believe that the process of collaboration and working together strengthens a child’s ability to be socially active and aware, to think creatively and critic

The Greek Myth Memoir gives the 10s an opportunity to embody a character from Greek Mythology. It is the final project of the year and blends all of the key skills the 10s have developed: reading comprehension, research and note-taking, paraphrasing, composing passages, editing and revising, constructed storytelling, and giving a presentation. The 10s particularly love adding a dramatic flair, hand-making costume elements and props.

Eighth graders just presented their Big Greene Projects (BGP), which are capstone projects that take place over the spring. Students selected a topic of interest and did research, interviewed an expert, created a visual component, reflected on the process and presented to a large audience of parents, students, and teachers. This year’s topics ranged from the History of Portraiture, to Understanding Dreams, to the Impact of Sugar on the Body, to Film Photography, to much more. This assignment is an opportunity for middle schoolers to synthesize all they have learned throughout their time at Greene Hill and is a culmination of Open Work. Many GHS graduates go on to continue studying their subject matter in high school through internships and independent study projects. Congratulations, 8th graders, for a job well-done!

This week the 7s held the grand opening of Eco City the culminating showcase of their Neighborhood Study! The class has been working on this project for months, beginning with the question, "What do cities need?" Students discussed the importance of transportation, utilities, hospitals, public housing, parks, places to live, and places to shop. As time progressed, they began to work in small groups, practicing teamwork and communication as they put down roads, constructed buildings, and made other important decisions for their neighborhood. They learned how to make cities safe, sustainable, and accessible, adding crosswalks, bike lanes, windmills, and solar panels. In this interdisciplinary project, students used math skills of measurement and spatial reasoning, as well as persuasive writing in preparation for a city council meeting in which they voted on city laws––topics such as guns, smoking, minimum wage, and other concepts important to the group. Congratulations to the 7s!

Thank you to the many alumni and alumni parents who joined GHS staff on Thursday. It was such a joy to catch up with graduates and hear about their lives and recent accomplishments. Students spoke about their 9th grade experiences, graduations from high school and college and the jobs they are starting soon. These are the young adults the world needs! We can’t wait to see our class of 2026 at next year’s event!

Next week, the 6s will be opening their classroom coffee shop after spending time studying coffee shops in the local neighborhood as part of their Community Work. Inspired by visits to and , students have been observing how coffee shops welcome customers and organize their space. They even created floor plans of Hungry Ghost and used them to build a model of the coffee shop in the classroom using blocks and other materials. They will now bring those ideas back to the classroom as they reorganize their space, design their menus, take orders, and prepare to run their own coffee shop.

This was part of an emergent curriculum based on a survey of local businesses, including a restaurant, a mini market, and other stops along the way. They chose coffee shops out of these different options.

Throughout their experience at GHS, children build independence, confidence, and resilience. They learn to advocate for themselves, collaborate with others, and approach both academics and relationships with perspective. They come to understand that challenges are temporary and that growth comes from taking on problems, not avoiding them. We see direct evidence of this when our eighth graders reflect on their time at GHS. They describe eloquently how they have overcome challenges, grown in their ability to work hard and think deeply, and are excited to spread their wings and move on to amazing high schools. We recently held an 8th grade panel where students shared their experiences over the years at GHS. Some of their comments include:

I have been going to GHS for 10 years. I love it. Because I have been here for so long, it is hard to put into words how close I am with everyone. I have grown up with everyone and watched them grow up too.”

“To be in 8th grade feels like I am at the top of the middle school, a role model for everyone younger than me. It shows me how much I have grown over my years at Greene Hill, and it is our responsibility to put in the most effort to demonstrate good leadership.”

“I have a strong relationship with almost every teacher here. I know the values and the morals of this school very well, and this means I can do my best to represent them in any way possible.”

GHS 6th - 8th graders enjoyed putting their Spanish skills to use this week at the eighth grade restaurant. Older students prepared traditional cuisine and created menus from one of the Spanish-speaking countries, and their younger counterparts practiced their speaking skills by ordering a meal in Spanish. This event highlights the integration of vocabulary, grammar and speaking skills with a deep understanding of the cultural component of countries around the world.
