The priest is holding one of the famous Mummies of Venzone. These remains were naturally preserved in the crypt of the village's Cathedral of Saint Andrew the Apostle.

Discovery: The first mummy, nicknamed "il Gobbo" (The Hunchback), was found in 1647 during cathedral renovations.

Natural Mummification: The preservation was caused by a rare, parasitic fungus called Hypha bombycina, which quickly dehydrated the bodies before they could decompose.

Local Tradition: For centuries, the villagers viewed these remains as "divine guardians." They would often interact with them, treat them like elders, and even pose with them for photos—a tradition that peaked in the mid-20th century.

The 1976 Earthquake: A massive earthquake devastated Venzone in 1976, destroying the cathedral. While many mummies were lost, 15 were salvaged and are now displayed in a museum near the rebuilt cathedral.
