The Library's main goal is to reinforce and advance the academic mission of the College by providing resources and services in support of new and existing programs. The Library serves the entire Bank Street community, as well as others in the field of education because of its wide-ranging holdings in early childhood education.

20 years ago, June 12, 2006, The Lucy Sprague Mitchell Society held a luncheon in honor of Dorothy Carter’s work as an educator in public schools and Bank Street College, as well as an author and chair of the Bank Street Writers Lab. She was the first recipient of the Lucy Sprague Mitchell Award. In addition to being one of the first African-American Graduate Faculty members at Bank Street College, Carter was a Broadway actor, whose credits include Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit in 1945. Today, Carter’s memory is honored by Bank Street with the Writer-in-Residence program.
In the first photo from the luncheon from left to right: alumna Dr. Lorraine Monroe, internationally acclaimed educator and author, founder of the Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute; alumna Dr. Lonnetta Gaines, educator and children's book author, former Graduate School faculty member; Katy O'Donnell, former Graduate School faculty member; Dorothy Carter; alumnus Hal Melnick, former Graduate School faculty member; and Bank Street President Emeritus Augusta Souza. The second photo shows Dorothy Carter photographed by Elaine Wickens in 1971.
