YMS College Success Centers

A decade of impact. So many lives transformed. Countless futures changed. What started as a bold vision by YMS students in 2013 became a movement that reshaped how Newark supports its youth’s post secondary planning. When progress stalled, YMS didn’t wait—we took action, secured funding, and opened the first few College Success Centers in 2015. Now, 10 years later, our CSCs have helped students become engineers, nurses, educators, and leaders. Today, we celebrate this milestone and the power of youth-led change. Thank you, Essex County Commissioner A’Dorian Murray-Thomas, A'Dorian Murray-Thomas for recognizing this work and the ongoing legacy of the YMS College Success Centers!

Yesterday the ALI-YMS Pathways Success Centers team assisted 16 University High School seniors with college applications! Newark Youth Career Pathways ALI - Abbott Leadership Institute

For over 15 years the Youth Media Symposium has made it a priority to engage our youth advocates in the school board elections. Students have created videos to remind adults to vote, hosted candidates forums with The Gem Project, Inc. and more importantly, set forth agenda items that mattered to them - like student voice and college readiness for all, which resulted in the YMS College Success Centers. Now, thanks to local legislation and the efforts of New Jersey Institute for Social Justice 16 year olds can VOTE. Join us on Saturday for the VOTE 16 Summit, a day dedicated to empowering young people age 14-24 to secure their voting power.

In February, the Abbott Leadership Institute's College Success Centers kicked off the Newark FAFSA Tour in collaboration with Newark Youth Career Pathways! We've been making stops at various schools, including Malcolm X Shabazz, University High School, Lead Charter, Arts High, and more. At each school, we offer two sessions, providing students and parents with the opportunity to efficiently complete their FAFSA with direct assistance from HESAA professionals and trained partners. This alleviates stress for families and ensures students fulfill their high school requirement of submitting their FAFSA.
